Objectives
THE COURSE IS AT ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE ON THE TECHNIQUES FOR THE QUALITY CONTROL OF HERBAL PREPARATIONS, ON EXTRACTION, ISOLATION AND PURIFICATION METHODS AS WELL AS ON THE STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION OF NATURAL COMPOUNDS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- SPECTROSCOPIC AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES FOR THE QUALI-QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF HERBAL PREPARATIONS
-VALIDATION OF ANALYTICAL METHODS.
- EXTRACTION METHODS OF BIOACTIVE CONSTITUENTS FROM PLANTS
- CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHODS FOR THE ISOLATION OF NATURAL PRODUCTS
- METHODS FOR THE STRUCTURE ELUCIDATION
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- DEVELOP A METHOD FOR THE QUALITY CONTROL
- ADDRESS AND SOLVE PROBLEMS ABOUT THE EXTRACTION AND ISOLATION OF NATURAL COMPOUNDS
- ANALYZE THE DATA FOR THE STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION
MAKING JUDGMENTS
THE STUDENT AT THE END OF THE COURSE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DISCUSS ON
- THE FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS
OF THE APPLICATION OF THE MAIN EXTRACTIVE AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHODS DIRECT TO THE ISOLATION
OF PLANT SECONDARY METABOLITES;
- THE FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF THE APPLICATION OF THE MAIN SPECTROSCOPIC AND SPECTROMETRIC METHODS AIMED TO THE STRUCTURE ELUCIDATION OF COMPOUNDS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT CLASSES OF NATURAL PRODUCTS.
Prerequisites
TO KNOW THE BASICS OF EXTRACTIVE AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHODS AND THE MAIN PHYSIC METHODS FOR STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION OF ORGANIC MOLECULES.
Contents
QUALITY CONTROL FOR HERBAL PREPARATIONS (CLASSIFICATION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF HERBAL PREPARATIONS, FACTORS AFFECTING THEIR QUALITY AND SAFETY; NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL GUIDELINES FOR THE QUALITY CONTROLOF HERBAL PREPARATIONS) (FRONTAL INSTRUCTIONS 8H)
EXTRACTION METHODS OF BIOACTIVE CONSTITUENTS FROM PLANTS (MACERATION, PERCOLATION, ASE, MASE, NAVIGLIO EXTRACTION, EXTRACTION BY SUPERCRITIC FLUIDS, SPE, DES).(FRONTAL INSTRUCTIONS 4H AND LABORATORY EXERCITATIONS 2H)
APPLICATION OF THE MAIN EXTRACTIVE AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHODS (ADSORBIMENT, RIPARTITION, GEL FILTRATION, TLC, HPLC, GC) TO THE ISOLATION OF SECONDARY METABOLITES (FRONTAL INSTRUCTIONS 2H AND LABORATORY EXERCITATIONS 2H)
APPLICATION OF THE MAIN SPECTROSCOPIC METHODS (UV, IR, NMR) AND OF MASS SPECTROMETRY (ESMS, MALDI-MS, HRMS) TO STRUCTURE ELUCIDATION OF SECONDARY METABOLITES. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAYED TO STRUCTURE DETERMINATION BY MONO- (1H, 13C, DEPT, 1D-TOCSY) AND BIDIMENSIONAL (COSY, TOCSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY E ROESY) NMR EXPERIMENTS. (FRONTAL INSTRUCTIONS 6H AND LABORATORY EXERCITATIONS 4H)
STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION OF COMPOUNDS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT CLASSES OF NATURAL PRODUCTS: ALKALOIDS, FLAVONOIDS, COUMARINS, PHENYLPROPANOIDS, TERPENES, STEROLS, GLYCOSIDES ( INTERACTIVE TEACHING 20 H)

Teaching Methods
THE DIDACTIC METHOD IS BASED ON FRONTAL LESSONS, IN WHICH THE CONTENT OF THE TEACHING IS PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED WITH THE CONTRIBUTION OF SLIDES PROJECTED AT THE GUIDE OF THE STUDENT (FRONTAL INSTRUCTIONS 20 H) , AND ON INTERACTIVE TEACHING (20 H) AND LABORATORY EXERCITATIONS (8 H).
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEST TO BE SUSTAINED IN THE SAME EXAM SESSION. THE RATING IS X/30. PASS THE WRITTEN TEST WITH A SCORE OF 18/30, IT IS MANDATORY TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THE ORAL TEST, AND REACH THE FINAL GRADE. THE WRITTEN TEST TAKES THREE HOURS AND CONSISTS OF TWO EXERCISES (1 EXERCISE ON THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF ONE NATURAL COMPOUND AND 1 EXERCISE ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF 5 NATURAL COMPOUNDS ).
THE ORAL EXAMINATION IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE LEVEL OF THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE, THE AUTONOMY OF ANALYSIS AND JUDGMENT, AND THE STUDENT'S EXPOSITION CAPABILITIES. THE LEVEL OF EVALUATION OF THE TEST TAKES INTO ACCOUNT CRITICAL THINKING AND THE STUDENT'S AWARENESS OF THE TOPICS SUBJECT TO STUDY.
THE FINAL EVALUATION IS OBTAINED AS THE AVERAGE OF THE PARTIAL EVALUATIONS.
THE MINIMUM ASSESSMENT LEVEL (18/30) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT HAS A FRAGMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS AND SHOWS A LIMITED ABILITY TO USE THEM.
THE MAXIMUM EVALUATION LEVEL (30/30) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT HAS A COMPLETE AND EXHAUSTIVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS AND SHOWS A REMARKABLE ABILITY TO USE THEM IN RELATION TO THE STUDY CONTEXT.
30/30 CUM LAUDE WILL BE GIVEN ONLY TO STUDENTS WITH A SIGNIFICANT KNOWLEDGE OF THE METHODOLOGIES AND WITH A HIGH ABILITY TO RE-WORK THE ACQUIRED CONCEPTS.
DURING THE COURSE, THE STUDENT ALSO HAS THE POSSIBILITY TO CARRY OUT 1 PARTIAL TEST. THE PASSING OF THE PARTIAL TEST MAY EXEMPT FROM THE PERFORMANCE OF THE WRITTEN TEST.
