Objectives
THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH AN ADEQUATE PREPARATION FOR QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF ORGANIC DRUGS BOTH NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC. THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF EITHER THE THEORETICAL OR PRATICAL QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF ACTIVE SUBSTANCES OF THE ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN PHARMACOPOEIA, BY MEANS OF THE APPLICATION OF CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL METHODS AND INSTRUMENTAL METHODS.
STUDENTS APPLYING THE ACQUIRED SKILLS SHOULD BE ABLE TO CARRY OUT A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF ACTIVE SUBSTANCE REPORTED IN ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN PHARMACOPEA, CRITICALLY ASSESS THE RESULT AND APPLY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHOD FOR THE QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF HEALTH PRODUCTS.
Prerequisites
INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY, INTRODUCTIVE LAB TO DRUG ANALYSIS AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY ARE CONSIDERED BRIDGING COURSES THAT PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED FOR THIS COURSE.

THE CLASS PROGRAM IS BASED ON SPECIFIC ROAD MAPS AND PORTIONED IN TWO PARTS: FRONTAL LECTURES AND LABORATORY PRACTICE. THE COURSE WILL BE STRUCTURED AS FOLLOWS:
- PRESENTATION OF THE COURSE, PHARMACOPOEIA (2 HOURS - 0,25 ECTS)
- ORGANOLEPTIC TEST. (2 HOURS - 0,25 ECTS)
- PURE SUBSTANCE ANALYSIS: CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL PROPERTIES, COMBUSTION REACTIONS, OPTICAL ACTIVITY, REFRACTIVE INDEX, DENSITY, MELTING POINT AND BOILING POINT. (4 HOURS - 0,50 ECTS)
- ELEMENTARY QUALITATIVE ORGANIC ANALYSIS AND GENERAL TESTS - LASSEIGNE'S TEST: FOR THE DETECTION OF CARBON AND HYDROGEN, NITROGEN, SULFUR AND HALOGENS. (4 HOURS - 0,50 ECTS)
- GENERAL ASSAYS: ASSAY FOR UNSATURATION AND FOR AROMATIC RING. (2 HOURS - 0,25 ECTS)
- LABORATORY TEST FOR MAIN FUNCTIONAL GROUPS: CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND DERIVATIVES; ALDEHYDES AND KETONES; ACETALS AND KETALS; CARBOHYDRATES; ALCOHOLS AND PHENOLS; AMINES; AMINO ACIDS; ALKALOIDS. (16 HOURS - 2,00 ECTS)
- ACQUISITION OF TERMINOLOGY AND INTRODUCTION TO LABORATORY PRACTICE, RECOGNITION OF LABORATORY GLASSWARE AND THEIR PROPER USE FOR ORGANIC DRUG ANALYSIS. (2 HOURS - 0,25 ECTS)
- SAFETY IN LABORATORY. (2 HOURS - 0,25 ECTS)
- MAIN PURIFICATION TECHNIQUES: SOLVENT EXTRACTION, CRYSTALLIZATION AND DISTILLATION. (4 HOURS - 0,50 ECTS)
- THEORY AND PRACTICE OF THE KEY PURIFICATION TECHNIQUES (CLASSICAL CHROMATOGRAPHY, FLASH, TLC, GC, HPLC, UPLC). (8 HOURS - 1,00 ECTS)
- SPECTROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES: (UV, IR). (4 HOURS - 0,50 ECTS)
- SOLUBILITY AND STRUCTURE: SOLUBILITY IN WATER; ORGANIC SOLVENTS; ACID AND ALKALI. (4 HOURS - 0,50 ECTS)
- KEY SEPARATION TECHNIQUES (STAUDINGER METHOD). (6 HOURS - 0,75 ECTS)
- THE OTHER HOURS ARE DEDICATED TO LABORATORY ACTIVITIES (20 HOURS - 2,50 ECTS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 80 HOURS OF ASSISTED TEACHING (10 ECTS) AND CONSISTS IN LECTURES AND GUIDED LABORATORY EXERCISES IN INDIVIDUAL WORKSPACE FOR QUALITATIVE ORGANIC ANALYSIS OF ORGANIC DRUGS.
POWERPOINT AS A VISUAL AID WILL BE USED FOR LECTURES AND ALL THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE PROGRAM WILL BE ADDRESSED.
BEFORE EACH LABORATORY EXERCISE STUDENTS WILL BE PROPERLY INSTRUCTED AND PROVIDED WITH THE MATERIAL CONCERNING THE EXERCISE ITSELF.
ATTENDANCE OF LECTURES IN BOTH CLASSROOM AND LABORATORY IS MANDATORY. IN ORDER TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED:
AT LEAST 70% OF THE HOURS PROVIDED BY FRONTAL TEACHING AND 80% OF THE HOURS PROVIDED FOR LABORATORY PRACTICE.
THE PRESENCE CHECKING MODE IS GENERALLY ELECTRONIC TYPE OR STATED BY THE TEACHER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE COURSE.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM. THE EXAM INCLUDES A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST WHICH TAKE PLACE ON DIFFERENT DAYS.

THE WRITTEN TEST, MANDATORY FOR THE ACCESS TO THE ORAL TEST, CONSISTS OF SIX QUESTIONS WITH OPEN ANSWERS. THE TEST HAS A DURATION NOT EXCEEDING 90 MINUTES AND IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE ACQUISITION OF THE MINIMUM LEARNING OBJECTIVES.
THE ORAL TEST, LASTING ABOUT 30 MINUTES, CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW PURPOSED TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING REACHED BY THE STUDENT AND THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED. THE ORAL EXAM WILL ALSO ALLOW TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S COMMUNICATION SKILLS WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND THE AUTONOMOUS ORGANIZATION OF THE EXPOSURE.
THE FINAL MARK WILL TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION BOTH THE RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND THE ORAL TEST AND THE RESULTS ACHIEVED DURING THE LABORATORY EXERCISES.

THE EVALUATION OF THE LABORATORY TEST WILL TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE STUDENT'S COMPETENCES IN PROPERLY CARRYING OUT THE ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES OF PHARMACEUTICAL INTEREST AND THE ABILITY TO FOLLOW SCRUPULOUSLY THE FORESEEN SAFETY RULES.ALSO IN THIS CASE THE VOTE IS EXPRESSED IN THIRTIES.

THE FINAL MARK OF THE EXAM WILL NOT NECESSARILY BE THE MATHEMATICAL AVERAGE OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED AT EACH SINGLE TEST.

DURING THE COURSE, IF DELIVERED IN THE PRESENCE FOR ALL STUDENTS, THE STUDENT ALSO HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CARRY OUT TWO PARTIAL TESTS (PIT). FOR EACH SINGLE TEST PASSED A VOTE WILL BE AWARDED BETWEEN 18 AND 30. THE FINAL RESULT OF THE PIT IS OBTAINED BY MATHEMATICAL AVERAGE OF THE TESTS TAKEN. THE DATES OF THE PIT ARE ESTABLISHED ANNUALLY AND WILL BE DECIDED TOGETHER WITH THE STUDENTS. PASSING THE PARTIAL TESTS IS CONSIDERED A SUBSTITUTE OF THE WRITTEN TEST. THE EXEMPTION IS VALID ONLY FOR THE EXAM SESSION IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE END OF THE COURSE.
