RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Expert in Organic Synthesis, Identification of Bioactive compounds, Analytical chemistry. In particular: organic synthesis of peptides and heterocyclic compounds by traditional and solid phase methods, endowed with pharmacological properties. Alternative synthetic methods such as microwave-assisted and continuous flow chemistry. Spectroscopy techniques (particularly NMR) applied to the analysis of small molecules. Expert in the chemical characterization and biological evaluation of molecules present in food and vegetable matrices, as well as on the study and optimization of new reaction protocols applicable to organic synthesis. Liquid-Liquid Extraction, thin Layer Chromatography (TLC, PLC), normal Phase Liquid Chromatography flash Chromatography use. Dr. Musella is expert in Drug Discovery, Drug Design, Combinatorial synthesis, and NMR spectroscopy (H1 and C13 and 2D spectra) applied in different fields (Cancer, Antiviral, Antibacterial, Antinflammatory and Channelopathies fields). Dr Musella’s research programme has continued to explore new scientific areas such as nutraceutics and metabolomics, applied to pharmaceutical chemistry. In the nutraceutical field, Dr Musella has mainly been involved in the analytical characterization and evaluation of the pharmacological properties of bioactive molecules present in natural matrices of animal and plant origin. In the field of metabolomics, the Doctor has been responsible for the application of specific analytical techniques for the analysis and regulation of metabolites characteristic of certain pathologies, in order to study their stages of development and progression.
