Obiettivi
To have a knowledge of the main types of technical and scientific documentation. To be able to conduct a bibliographic research. To be able to write a scientific article, a research proposal, a review, a technical presentation.

Prerequisiti
Due to the peculiar nature and objectives of the course, this learning activity does not require a background about specific technical topics.
It is assumed that the students have some practice in reading technical articles and that they are able to write correctly in English (with general knowledge of the technical terminology employed in the context of Information Engineering).

Contenuti

1.Evaluating research quality. Scientometrics. Author-level metrics. Journal level metrics. (Lectures: 2 hours; Exercises: 2 hours)
2.Why and where to publish. Motivation: dissemination, research progress, participation to a scientific community, certification of the results. Types of publication.
(Lectures: 3 hours)
3.Manuscript organization. Structure of a scientific article. Journal paper vs. conference paper. Writing style.
(Lectures: 3 hours; Laboratory: 2 hours)
4.Editorial Roles. The peer review process. Revising and reviewing guidelines
(Lectures: 2 hours; Laboratory: 4 hours)

Metodi Didattici
The course includes 10 hours of lectures, 2 hours of supervised exercises and 6 hours of laboratory. Lectures are aimed at acquiring knowledge about how to evaluate research quality, select publication venues, organize a manuscript and carry out the revision process.
Exercises are aimed at acquiring applied knowledge and skills about author level and journal level metrics, manuscript construction, revision key points.
Laboratory is aimed at acquiring applied knowledge and skills for writing and publishing research work or formulating a detailed review report for a manuscript.
Attendance at the lectures, exercises and laboratory is mandatory; in order to be admitted to the exam, the student must participate at least 70% of the hours.

Verifica dell'apprendimento
The exam is made of the following parts:
An assignment in the form of a questionnaire addressing the key features of common metrics and their impact on the evaluation of research. This component is designed to verify whether students have achieved the learning outcome of being " able to conduct a bibliographic research”.

-A project work consisting in writing a short paper with strict page limits (typically, 4 pages) on a “classical” topic, where the focus is not on the technical aspects, but on how to convey a message and organize it into a scientific article. This part is aimed at verifying whether the students attain the learning outcome “to be able to write a scientific article”.
-An assignment consisting in writing a review report for a given paper according to the discussed guidelines. This part is aimed at verifying whether the students attain the learning outcome “to be able to write a review”.
