THE COURSE AIMS TO GIVE KNOWLEDGE OF BIOCHEMICAL TERMINOLOGY AND OF MOLECULAR BASES OF BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, OF ENZYMATIC CATALYSIS, OF STRUCTURE-FUNCTION RELATIONSHIP OF PROTEINS AND ENZYMES, OF MAIN METABOLIC PATHWAYS AND THEIR INTEGRATION. THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO MAKE STUDENTS ABLE TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, THUS THEY MAINLY USE IT TO UNDERSTANDING BIOCHEMICAL MECHANISMS. THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT WILL BE: •KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO PROTEINS, NUCLEIC ACIDS, CARBOHYDRATES AND LIPIDS •KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS EXPLAINED BY SUCH BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE ENZYMATIC FUNCTION, INTERACTIONS WITH MOLECULES OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC NATURE AND THEIR TRANSFORMATION •KNOWLEDGE ABOUT METABOLIC CYCLES IN WHICH THE ENZYMES PERFORM THEIR FUNCTIONS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE METABOLIC CYCLES OF GLUCIDS, CATABOLISM OF LIPIDS AND AMINO ACIDS. THE PRINCIPAL SKILLS ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT WILL BE: •EXPOSURE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VARIOUS BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES •EXPOSURE OF THE VARIOUS BIOCHEMICAL REACTIONS IN WHICH THE MAIN ENZYMES OF INTEREST ARE INVOLVED •USE OF AN APPROPRIATE BIOCHEMICAL LANGUAGE FOR THE EXPOSURE OF THESE KNOWLEDGE IN MORE DETAILS: KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS: - UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MAJOR CLASSES OF MACROMOLECULES OF BIOLOGICAL INTEREST - UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF MACROMOLECULES OF BIOLOGICAL INTEREST - UNDERSTANDING OF CELLULAR FUNCTIONING IN RELATION TO THE ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT BY VARIOUS TYPES OF MACROMOLECULES - UNDERSTANDING OF THE THERMODYNAMIC BASIS OF ENERGY FUNCTIONING IN CELLS AND ORGANISMS - UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNCTIONING OF ENZYMES AND THE MAIN MECHANISMS OF REGULATION OF ENZYME ACTIVITY - KNOWLEDGE OF THE VARIOUS METABOLIC CYCLES, BOTH CATABOLIC AND CATABOLIC, PARTICULARLY THE SUBSTRATES, INTERMEDIATES AND PRODUCTS OF REACTIONS AND THE MAIN ENZYMES INVOLVED IN THE VARIOUS METABOLIC STEPS ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: - ABILITY TO DESCRIBE IN APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES, INCLUDING THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE THEIR CHEMICAL STRUCTURES. - ABILITY TO RELATE THESE CHARACTERISTICS TO THE FUNCTIONING OF MACROMOLECULES AND THE CELLULAR STRUCTURES INVOLVED - ABILITY TO ENUNCIATE THE NAMES, SYMBOLS AND RECOGNIZE THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS OF AMINO ACIDS - ABILITY TO DESCRIBE THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MAJOR CLASSES OF PROTEINS ILLUSTRATED IN THE COURSE - ABILITY TO DESCRIBE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ENZYME, ENZYME KINETICS AND RECOGNIZE THE DIFFERENT MODES OF INHIBITION - ABILITY TO LIST THE VARIOUS ENZYMATIC STEPS OF THE MAJOR METABOLIC CYCLES COVERED IN THE COURSE, INDICATING REACTANTS AND REACTION PRODUCTS AND THE ENZYMES INVOLVED |

INTERACTIVE DIDACTICS METHODS AND FLIPPED CLASSROOM CAN BE APPLIED FOR SELECTED TOPICS. CLASS ATTENDANCE IS NOT COMPULSORY, BUT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. |

THE LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEACHING IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A WRITTEN TEST, AIMED AT VERIFYING THE ACQUISITION OF: KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS RELATED TO ALL THE TOPICS OF THE TEACHING; ABILITY TO CORRECTLY APPLY THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE; ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS PROPOSED; ADEQUATE LANGUAGE PROPERTY IN EXPOSITION. THE TEST IS OF LENGTH OF 45 MINUTES AND INCLUDES A COMBINATION OF 13 MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS (SCORING A VALUE OF 1 OR 2 POINTS, DEPENDING ON THE DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY), DIRECT (SHORT) ANSWER QUESTIONS (SCORING A MAXIMUM OF 3 POINTS), AND ONE OPEN QUESTION (SCORING A MAXIMUM OF 5 POINTS), FOR A TOTAL OF 32 POINTS. WRONG ANSWERS DO NOT CARRY A PENALTY. FOR OPEN QUESTIONS, A GRADED SCORE WILL BE AWARDED BY EVALUATING DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE, LANGUAGE PROPERTY, AND THE ABILITY TO CORRECTLY IDENTIFY THE BIOLOGICAL CONTEXT IN WHICH THE SUBJECT OF THE QUESTION IS SITUATED.
