THE COURSE AIMS AT THE ACQUISITION OF METHODOLOGIES OF LITERARY CRITICISM AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS FROM A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE. KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS THE STUDENT - WILL KNOW THE METHODS OF LITERARY CRITICISM - HE/SHE WILL KNOW THE TECHNIQUES OF LITERARY, METRICAL-VERSIFICATORY AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS; - KNOW THE HISTORY OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES. - HE/SHE WILL KNOW THE SOCIO-CULTURAL DYNAMICS THAT INFLUENCE THE DISSEMINATION AND RECEPTION OF LITERARY TEXTS. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL KNOW HOW TO - ANALYSE LINGUISTIC DATA FROM A SYNCHRONIC AND DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE; - TRANSLATE MEDIEVAL ROMANCE TEXTS FOLLOWING PHILOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODOLOGIES; - COMPARE THE PHONETIC AND MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES IN A COMPARATIVE MANNER; - COMPARE AND ANALYSE MEDIEVAL LITERARY TEXTS ON THE BASIS OF THE UNITY OF MEDIEVAL LITERATURE; - AUTONOMOUSLY TRANSLATE OLD FRENCH, OCCITAN OR CASTILIAN TEXTS; - INTERPRET THE SOCIO-CULTURAL DYNAMICS UNDERLYING THE DISSEMINATION AND RECEPTION OF A LITERARY TEXT; - DIACHRONICALLY COMPARE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF A LITERARY WORK. AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - USE PHILOLOGICAL TOOLS TO FORMULATE HYPOTHESES, RECOGNISE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS, ARGUE ABOUT THE CONTENT AND LANGUAGE OF TEXTS - COMPARE AND EVALUATE DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS DRAWN FROM THE READING OF LITERARY TEXTS AND DRAW APPROPRIATE CONCLUSIONS. COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO EXPRESS LITERARY CONTENT IN A NARRATIVE OR SYNTHETIC MANNER IN CRITICAL OR TRANSLATION VERSIONS; TRANSVERSAL SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL HAVE METHODOLOGICAL SKILLS IN THE LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY ANALYSIS OF TEXTS. |

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED IN TWO TRACKS: PHILOLOGICAL-LITERARY AND HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC. THROUGH THE READING, TRANSLATION AND PHILOLOGICAL, LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY COMMENTARY OF SOME PARTICULARLY RELEVANT TEXTS IN THE VARIOUS ROMANCE LANGUAGES, THE AIM IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS - TO THE SALIENT PHENOMENA OF THE FORMATION OF THE NEO-LATIN LANGUAGES WITH LINGUISTIC EXERCISES ON THE TEXTS READ AND TRANSLATED IN CLASS TO ILLUSTRATE THE INTERACTION OF THE MAIN LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA IN THE EVOLUTION OF WORDS FROM LATIN TO THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES, FOR A TOTAL OF 30 HOURS INCLUDING EXERCISES: - HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE BIRTH OF THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES: 6H - ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN PHONETIC PHENOMENA + EXERCISES: 12H -ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA: 8H - LEXICON AND SYNTAX: 4H -ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST VERNACULAR TEXTS AND THE MAIN LITERARY GENRES OF MEDIEVAL ROMANCE LITERATURE, THROUGH TRANSLATION INTO ITALIAN AND LITERARY COMMENTARY IN A COMPARATIVE KEY OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TEXTS FROM THE VARIOUS ROMANCE AREAS: - HISTORICAL-LITERARY INTRODUCTION = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE EPIC GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE LYRIC GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE NOVEL GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE SHORT STORY GENRE = 6H |

THE COURSE TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER AND COMPRISES THEORETICAL LECTURES AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. THE EXERCISES IN HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS CONSIST OF: GIVEN THE LATIN ETYMON OF A WORD AND ITS VARIOUS ROMANCES, IDENTIFYING THE LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA THAT DETERMINED ITS EVOLUTION. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LECTURES AND EXERCISES WITH THE NECESSARY DILIGENCE AND ATTENTION. THE COURSE PROVIDES TWO SIMILAR BUT DISTINCT SYLLABUSES OF STUDY: FOR FREQUENT AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS. A STUDENT CAN BE DEFINED AS AN ATTENDING STUDENT IF HE/SHE ATTENDS AT LEAST 24 HOURS OF HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS LECTURES AND 24 HOURS OF LITERATURE LECTURES, I.E. WITH A MAXIMUM ABSENTEE RATE OF 20% OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS. |

ATTAINMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN ORAL EXAMINATION WITH A GRADE IN THIRTIETHS. THE EXAMINATION INVOLVES THE READING, TRANSLATION AND LINGUISTIC, VERSIFYING AND LITERARY COMMENTARY OF ONE OR MORE PASSAGES ANALYSED IN CLASS AND CHOSEN BY THE TEACHER. IT BEGINS WITH THE TEXTUAL AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF A PASSAGE AND THEN BROADENS THE DISCOURSE IN A COMPARATIVE KEY, CONSIDERING OTHER TEXTS, LITERARY GENRES AND COEVAL LINGUISTIC EXPRESSIONS. THE EXAMINATION IS PASSED IF THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE PROGRAMME. IN ASSESSING THE ORAL EXAMINATION THE FOLLOWING WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT -KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER -ABILITY TO SYNTHESISE AND CLARITY OF EXPOSITION -ABILITY TO ANALYSE TEXTS FROM A PHILOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW BY PLACING THEM IN A PRECISE HISTORICAL-LITERARY FRAMEWORK. |
