THE COURSE IS INTEGRATED BY TWO MODULES: ONE MODULE OF BIOCHEMISTRY (5 CFU) AND THE OTHER MODULE OF PLANTS GENETICS (4 CFU). THE MODULE OF BIOCHEMISTRY AIMS TO PROVIDE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR ORGANIZATION OF THE MAIN BIOMOLECULES, AS WELL AS KEY BIOCHEMICAL PROCESSES, BASIC CONCEPTS OF BIOENERGETICS AND THE GENERAL IMPORTANCE OF METABOLISM. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE ON: I) THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND FUNCTION OF THE DIFFERENT CLASSES OF BIOMOLECULES BOTH FROM A POINT OF VIEW STRUCTURAL AND CELLULAR METABOLISM II) THE MECHANISMS FOR GENERATING AND USING ENERGY III) THE BIOLOGICAL OBJECTIVES THAT INTERDEPENDENTLY CONNECT THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF METABOLISM. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO USE BIOCHEMICAL TERMINOLOGY APPROPRIATELY TO DISCUSS THE PHYSICOCHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MAIN BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES, AS WELL AS UNDERSTAND THE ACTIVITY AND REGULATION OF ENZYMES. THEY WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO ORIENT THEMSELVES AMONG THE MAIN METABOLIC PATHWAYS AT A CELLULAR LEVEL AND UNDERSTAND THEIR REGULATORY PROCESS. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP CRITICAL SKILLS THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO INTEGRATE THE BIOCHEMICAL KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE CONTEXT OF LABORATORY ACTIVITIES. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED CLEARLY AND WITH APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, DEMONSTRATING FULL UNDERSTANDING AND MASTERY OF THE TOPIC. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DEVELOP AN APPROACH TO LEARNING THAT WILL ALLOW HIM TO PROGRESS IN HIS STUDIES INDEPENDENTLY AND CRITICALLY THE MODULE IN PLANT GENETICS IS AIMED AT OFFERING TO THE STUDENTS BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS CONTROLLING THE MAIN CELLULAR FUNCTIONS, WITH MAJOR EMPHASIS ON PLANT CELLS, ANALYZING AND DISCUSSING THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GENETIC INHERITANCE OF TRAITS, INCLUDING ALSO THE GENETIC MECHANISMS CONTROLLING THE BIOSYNTHESIS OF BIOACTIVE PLANT-DERIVED SECONDARY METABOLITES. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE ON THE GENETIC AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS CONTROLLING: -THE PLANT GROWTH, DIFFERENTIATION, DEVELOPMENT AND REPRODUCTION; - THE INTERACTION OF PLANTS WITH THE ENVIRONMENT; -THE ABILITY TO SYNTHESIZE SECONDARY METABOLITES AND COMPOUNDS OF INTEREST FOR THE HUMAN HEALTH; TO FACE AND SOLVE PROBLEMS IN THE FIELDS OF PLANT IMPROVEMENT AND PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON MEDICINAL PLANTS. |

BIOCHEMISTRY UNIT TEACHING IS CARRIED OUT THROUGH FRONTAL THEORETICAL LESSONS IN WHICH THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE ARE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED. UNIT PLANT GENETICS THEORETICAL LESSONS CONSIST IN PRESENTING AND DISCUSSING THE TOPICS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM. TWO INTERMEDIATE WRITTEN TESTS ARE PLANNED TO ASCERTAIN THE PROGRESSIVE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENTS. FOR BOTH MODULES, CLASS ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY, AS ESTABLISHED BY THE TEACHING RULES AND GUIDELINES, PUBLISHED EVERY YEAR AND AVAILABLE AT THE WWW.DIFARMA.UNISA.IT. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND CLASS REGULARLY AND MEET ALL REQUIREMENTS SET BY THE TEACHER. BIOCHEMISTRY UNIT THE FINAL TEST IS DIVIDED INTO A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST, AND INCLUDES A RATING OUT OF THIRTY, TO VERIFY THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE. THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS OF THIRTY QUESTIONS WITH OPEN ANSWERS AND MULTIPLE ANSWERS AND MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 60 MINUTES. IN THE ORAL EXAM STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ON TOPICS RELATING TO THE COURSE PROGRAM. THE STUDENT'S CRITICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL SKILLS WILL BE ASSESSED. FOR EACH QUESTION POSED, AN ASSESSMENT IS MADE BASED ON THE CORRECTNESS OF THE ANSWERS, THE DEMONSTRATED UNDERSTANDING OF THE PRINCIPLES LEARNED AND THE LEVEL OF EXPOSURE, ALSO IN RELATION TO THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PROGRAM AS WELL AS THE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY FOR UNDERSTANDING THE SPECIFIC MATTER EXAMINATION. THE OVERALL JUDGMENT WILL DETERMINE THE FINAL MARK IN THIRTY, CALCULATED AS THE AVERAGE VALUE OF THE SCORE OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN TEST (WEIGHT: 50%, AND OF THE ORAL TEST (50%) THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS IN A CRITICAL DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS INCLUDED IN THE WRITTEN TEST, TO ASCERTAIN ALSO THE LEVEL OF BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED THEORETICAL BIOCHEMICAL ASPECTS TO THE HUMAN CELL, ORGAN AND TISSUE FUNCTIONS. THE FINAL SCORE, EXPRESSED IN 30/30 IS CALCULATED AS THE MEAN VALUE OF THE SCORES OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS AND ORAL EXAMINATION. THE FINAL SCORE, EXPRESSED IN 30/30, FOR THIS UNIT WILL BE CALCULATED AS THE MEAN VALUES OF THE SCORES OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS (WEIGHT 50 % AND THE ORAL EXAM (WEIGHT 50%). UNIT PLANT GENETICS THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING AND THE ABILTY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED THEORETICAL NOTIONS WILL BE EVALUATED THROUGH: 1) AN INTERMEDIATED WRITTEN TEST ON THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE, INCLUDING A TOTAL OF 30 QUESTIONS WITH AN OPEN ANSWER (50%) AND QUESTIONS WITH MULTIPLE CHOICE ANSWERS (50%) (DURATION: 2 HOURS); FOR THE WRITTEN TEST THE SCORE IS EXPRESSED IN 30/30. STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THE WRITTEN TEST WILL GO THROUGH AN ORAL EXAM ON THE TOPICS NOT INCLUDED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS. DURING THE ORAL EXAM, STUDENTS WILL BE ALSO ASSESSED FOR THEIR ABILITY TO SOLVE EXERCISES ABOUT MENDELIAN GENETICS AND THE EXTENSIONS OF MENDEL'S LAWS. THE FINAL SCORE, EXPRESSED IN 30/30, FOR THIS UNIT WILL BE CALCULATED AS THE MEAN VALUES OF THE SCORES OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN TEST (WEIGHT 50 %) AND THE ORAL EXAM (WEIGHT 50%). THE OVERALL SCORE FOR THE ENTIRE COURSE WILL BE THE MEAN VALUE OF THE SCORES OBTAINED FOR EACH UNIT.
