YEAR OF COURSE 3
YEAR OF DIDACTIC SYSTEM 2016
SPRING SEMESTER
CFUHOURSACTIVITY
642LESSONS
Objectives
KNOWLEDGE OF GENETIC RESOURCES OF CROP PLANTS PRESENT IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA, GENETIC EROSION, TRADITIONAL AND INNOVATIVE SYSTEMS AND METHODOLOGIES FOR THEIR CONSERVATION, GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION AND EVALUATION; NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS FOR PLANT GERMPLASM COLLECTIONS AND MANAGEMENT.  AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY HIS/HER SKILLS AND ACQUIRED GENETIC/MOLECULAR TOOLS TO CHARACTERIZE/EVALUATE PLANT GERMPLASM COLLECTIONS; TO IDENTIFY ECOTYPES AND LOCAL VARIETIES FOR A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE MEDITERRANEAN AREAS.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS ARE REQUESTED TO HAVE A BROAD PREVIOUS KNOWLEWDGE IN PLANT BIOLOGY, BOTANY, PLANT GENETICS AND GENETIC IMPROVEMENT: PREPARATORY EXAM: PLANT GENETICS AND GENETIC IMPROVEMENT
Contents
THE COURSE (6 ECTS) CONSISTS OF THEORETICAL LECTURES AND PRACTICAL LABORATORY CLASSES ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:

1.GENETIC, SPECIES AND ECOLOGICAL BIODIVERSITY. PLANT BIODIVERSITY (1 ECTS / 7 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LECTURES)
2.CENTERS OF ORIGIN: PLANTS EVOLUTION AND DOMESTICATION (0,5 ECTS /3,5 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LESSONS)
3.ASSESSMENT OF GENETIC VARIABILITY (0,5 ECTS / 3,5 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LECTURES)
4.CHARACTERIZATION, CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF GERMPLASM COLLECTIONS (0,5 ECTS / 3,5 HOURS OF
THEORETICAL LECTURES + 0,5 0,5 ECTS / 3,5 HOURS PRACTICAL CLASSES)
5.STRATEGIES AND METHODS FOR CROP GENOTYPING (1 ECTS / 7 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LECTURES)
6.GENETICS AND MOLECULAR APPROACHES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF NEW PLANT VARIETIES (1 ECTS / 7 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LECTURES + 0,5 ECTS / 3,5 HOURS PRACTICAL CLASSES)
7.RESCUE, CHARACTERZATION AND VALORIZATION OF LOCAL GENETIC RESOURSES (0,5 ECTS /3,5 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LECTURES)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES THEORETICAL AND PRATICAL LESSONS AS IT FOLLOWS:

5 ECTS - THEORETICAL LESSONS (PPT PRESENTATION, USE OF ONLINE TOOLS INCLUDING AUDIO AND VIDEO

1 ECTS- PRATICAL CLASSES INCLUDING PLANT IN VITRO CELL CULTURES AND MOLECULAR METHODOLOGIES AIMED AT ANALYZING PLANT VARIETIES
Verification of learning
THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTANDING AND THE ABILTY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED THEORETICAL NOTIONS WILL BE EVALUATED THROUGH:
1) AN INTERMEDIATED WRITTEN TEST ON THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE (INCLUDING THE PART ON GERMPLASM CONSERVATION, POINT 4 ), CONSISTING IN QUESTIONS WITH OPEN ANSWERS (50%) AND QUESTIONS WITH MULTIPLE CHOICE ANSWERS (50%) (DURATION: 2 HOURS); THE DATE OF THE TEST WILL BE COMMUNICATED IN ADVANCE ON THE PROFESSOR'S WEBPAGE. APPROXIMATIVELY, THE TEST WILL BE DONE WITHIN THE SIXTH AND THE EIGHTH WEEK OF THE COURSE

2) A WRITTEN REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES PERFORMED IN THE PRACTICAL CLASSES.

3) AN ORAL EXAMINATION (APPROXIMATIVELY 30 MINUTES)

ONLY STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THE WRITTEN TEST WILL GO THROUGH AN ORAL EXAM ON THE TOPICS NOT INCLUDED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS. THE MINIMUM PASSING GRADE FOR THE WRITTEN EXAM IS 18/30.

FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT PASSED TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY THE INTERMEDIATE WRITTEN TEST ARE REQUESTED TO FACE A WRITTEN EXAM IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE ORAL EXAM.

FOR WRITTEN TESTS AND THE REPORT THE GRADE IS EXPRESSED IN 30/30.

THE FINAL GRADE IS SCORED OUT OF A MAXIMUM OF 30 POINTS AND CALCULATED AS WEIGHTED AVERAGE (WEIGHT 40 % FIRST TEST; 40% ORAL EXAM; 10% WRITTEN REPORT ON PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES)

STUDENTS WHO PASS THE EXAM WITH THE MAXIMUM GRADE 30/30 ARE CANDIDATES FOR THE DESIGNATION OF “CUM LAUDE” IF THEY SHOW CRITICAL AND INDIPENDENT CAPABILITY TO DEAL WITH PRATICAL PROBLEMS ON PLANT BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION AND VALORIZATION.
