His thesis was entitled "Characterization and biological evaluation of antihypertensive peptides derived from the in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion of the microalga Spirulina platensis" (supervisor: prof. Pietro Campiglia).

On April 22, 2022, he obtained a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, defending a thesis titled "Development and application of omics technologies for the monitoring of personalized therapeutic protocols." From October 1, 2020, to March 31, 2023, he carried out a research period at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (Department of Proteomics and Signal Transduction, Germany) under the supervision of prof. Matthias Mann, focusing on developing nLC-MS methods using the EvosepOne-Tims-QTOF system.

In 2022, he was awarded a research fellowship at the University of Salerno (Department of Pharmacy) for a project focused on "Metabolomics and data analysis tools for the large-scale study of pathologies."

Since August 1, 2023, he has been working as researcher (Type A) at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Salerno.

Dr. Merciai is currently engaged in the development and optimization of analytical and extraction protocols based on liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry. His research focuses on the analysis of metabolites and lipids in biofluids, tissues and cell lysates to investigate the biological responses to physiopathological stimuli or pharmacological treatments. The ultimate goal of his work is to identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, monitor disease progression, and personalize therapeutic interventions.
