THE COURSE GIVES THE KNOWLEDGE ON MAJOR DISEASES AND PESTS AFFECTING VEGETABLE AND FRUIT CROPS IN MEDITERRANEAN AREAS, INCLUDING BIOLOGICAL ASPECTS, INNOVATIVE DETECTION METHODS AND MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES THROUGH ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY MEANS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: FUNDAMENTALS OF PLANT DISEASES AND PESTS; PLANT HOST-PATHOGEN-ENVIRONMENT AND INSECTS-OTHER ORGANISMS’ INTERACTIONS; BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON DIAGNOSTIC METHODS, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE MOST INNOVATIVE ONES; PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF INTEGRATED AND BIOLOGICAL PLANT PROTECTION, WITH REFERENCES ALSO TO BIOTECHNOLOGICAL STRATEGIES. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: IDENTIFY MAJOR PLANT DISEASES AND PESTS; DETECT AND IDENTIFY THE CAUSAL AGENTS THROUGH APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS; IMPLEMENT AND RECOMMEND SUITABLE PLANT PROTECTION STRATEGIES, WITH REFERENCE TO INSECTICIDE-RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT. |

MODULE DETECTION AND CONTROL OF MEDITERRANEAN CROP DISEASES: TRADITIONAL, SEROLOGICAL (ELISA, LATERAL FLOW TEST, ISEM, IMMUNOFLUORESCENCE) AND MOLECULAR (PCR, NESTED-PCR, LAMP, RT-PCR, REAL TIME PCR, MULTIPLEX PCR, NUCLEIC ACID HYBRIDIZATIONS) METHODS FOR DETECTION OF PLANT PATHOGENS (16 HOURS). INTEGRATED AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL MEHODS OF PLANT DISEASES (5 HOURS). MAJOR DISEASES OF POME FRUIT, STONE FRUIT, GRAPEVINE, CITRUS, OLIVE, SOLANACEOUS, BRASSICA, LEGUME, CUCURBIT, COMPOSITE, UMBELLIFEROUS, LILIACEOUS, STRAWBERRY, AND GRAMINEOUS CROPS: DETECTION, BIOLOGY AND CONTROL STRATEGIES (14 HOURS). MODULE ENTOMOLOGY APPLIED TO MEDITERRANEAN CROPS: BASICS OF ENTOMOLOGY (2,5 HOURS) DIAGNOSTIC AND CONTROL MOLECULAR MARKERS AND METHODS (5 HOURS). BIOLOGICAL AND BIOTECHNOLOGICAL STRATEGIES FOR PHYTOPHAGOUS INSECT CONTROL (5 HOURS). INSECT CONTROL MANAGEMENT IN MODEL AGROECOSYSTEMS (5 HOURS). |

THE COURSE CONSISTS OF TWO MODULES: DETECTION AND CONTROL OF MEDITERRANEAN CROP DISEASES (6 CFU) AND ENTOMOLOGY APPLIED TO MEDITERRANEAN CROPS (3 CFU). THE MODULE DETECTION AND CONTROL OF MEDITERRANEAN CROP DISEASES HAS A DURATION OF 42 HOURS (6 CFU) AND INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: CLASSROOM LECTURES (42 HOURS = 6 CFU), LABORATORY EXERCISES AND FIELD TRIPS (7 HOURS = 1 CFU. IT IS PLANNED AS FOLLOWS: CLASSROOM LECTURES ON ALL CONTENTS OF THE MODULE INCLUDING SEMINARIES BY EXPERTS IN PLANT PATHOLOGY; LABORATORY EXERCISE AND FIELD TRIP ACTIVITIES FOR VISUAL SYMPTOM ASSESSMENT OF THE AFFECTED PLANTS AND FOR DETECTING AND IDENTIFYING THE CAUSAL PLANT PATHOGENS (STUDENTS WILL UNDERTAKE 3 ACTIVITES OF 2 HOURS EACH AND 1 OF 1 HOUR). THE MODULE ENTOMOLOGY APPLIED TO MEDITERRANEAN CROPS HAS A DURATION OF 21 HOURS (3 CFU) AND INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: CLASSROOM LECTURES (17.5 HOURS = 2.5 CFU), LABORATORY EXERCISES AND FIELD TRIPS (3.5 HOURS = 1 CFU. IT IS PLANNED AS FOLLOWS: CLASSROOM LECTURES ON ALL CONTENTS OF THE MODULE INCLUDING SEMINARIES BY EXPERTS IN AGRICULTURAL ENTOMOLOGY; LABORATORY EXERCISE AND FIELD TRIP ACTIVITIES FOR DETECTING, IDENTIFYING AND LABORATORY DIAGNOSIS OF THE MAIN PHYTOPHAGOUS AND BENEFICIAL INSECTS (STUDENTS WILL UNDERTAKE 1 ACTIVITY OF 2 HOURS AND 1 OF 1.5 HOUR). |

ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE’S OBJECTIVES IS VALIDATED BY A FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION FOR EACH MODULE USING A THIRTIETHS-BASED RATING SCALE. THIS EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF QUESTIONS AND CRITICAL DISCUSSION ON THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND IS AIMED AT EVALUATING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE STUDENT, HIS COMMUNICATION SKILLS USING A PROPER TERMINOLOGY, AS WELL AS HIS ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE ON THE SAME THEORETICAL CONTENTS AUTONOMOUSLY. THE FINAL RATE WILL BE GIVEN BY THE WEIGHTED ARITHMETIC MEAN OF SCORES OBTAINED IN EACH MODULE. |
