ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE ON ASPECTS OF MORPHOLOGY, BIOLOGY, ECOLOGY, SYMPTOMATOLOGY, HARMFULNESS AND CONTROL OF THE MAIN ANIMAL PESTS OF AGRICULTURAL AND VETERINARY INTEREST BELONGING TO THE GROUPS OF NEMATODES, MITES, PULMONATE GASTROPODS, BIRDS AND RODENTS, AS WELL AS GENERALITIES RELATED TO GROUPS OF SECONDARY ANIMAL PESTS (CRUSTACEANS, MYRIAPODS, REPTILES) AND IN-DEPTH STUDIES ON USEFUL SPECIES USED IN BIOLOGICAL CONTROL. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO RECOGNISE PARASITES AND DEVELOP INTEGRATED CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR THE SPECIES OF MAJOR INTEREST. THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE WILL BE: -THE DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VARIOUS GROUPS AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN ECOSYSTEMS. -THE BASIC FEATURES OF THE MORPHOLOGY AND ANATOMY OF ANIMAL PESTS. -THE MAIN TYPES OF DAMAGE THAT CAN BE DONE TO PLANTS BY ANIMAL PARASITES, AND THE ROLE OF USEFUL SPECIES, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO ENTOMOPATHOGENS AND PREDATORS. -THE MAIN CONTROL TOOLS AGAINST PLANT-DAMAGING ANIMAL PESTS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THOSE WITH THE LEAST ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. -THE PRINCIPLES ON WHICH TO BASE PROPER MANAGEMENT OF ANIMAL PESTS IN THE CONTEXT OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE. THE MAIN SKILLS WILL BE: -ANALYSE AGRO-SYSTEMS AND IDENTIFY POTENTIAL ANIMAL PESTS. -IDENTIFY THE ANIMAL PESTS RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE THROUGH THE USE OF APPROPRIATE INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT TOOLS. - DEVISE AND ADVISE ON PROPER ANIMAL PEST MANAGEMENT OF PLANTS IN THE CONTEXT OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
THERE ARE NO FORMAL PREREQUISITES, BUT KNOWLEDGE OF BIOLOGY AND BOTANY, PLANT PATHOLOGY AND AGRICULTURAL ENTOMOLOGY IS REQUIRED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND AND APPLY MOST OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE. |

Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
TEACHING INCLUDES LECTURES (5 ETCS, 35 HRS) DELIVERED IN THE CLASSROOM WITH THE SUPPORT OF SLIDES, DEDICATED FILMS, ONLINE RESOURCES AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES (1 ETCS, 7 HRS) FOR THE RECOGNITION OF ANIMAL PESTS, DAMAGE AND CONTAMINATION. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN ORAL EXAMINATION WITH A GRADE IN THIRTIETHS ( MINIMUM 18/30). THE ORAL EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE TEACHING PROGRAMME. |
