Education
Francesco Cauteruccio obtained his Master's degree in Computer Science (with honors) in July 2014 from the University of Calabria. In January 2018, he earned his PhD in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Calabria, defending his thesis titled "Generalizing Identity-Based String Similarity Metrics: Theory and Applications."
Current and Previous Positions
- Since December 2023, he has been a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (Ricercatore a tempo determinato tipo b, RTDb) at the Department of Information Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics at the University of Salerno.
- From February 2022 to November 2023, he was an Assistant Professor (Ricercatore a tempo determinato tipo a, RTDa) at the Department of Information Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Marche.
- From August 2019 to January 2022, he was an Assistant Professor (RTDa) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Calabria.
- From January 2021 to January 2022, he was a Visiting Researcher at the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (Austria).
- From September 2016 to January 2017, he was a Visiting Ph.D. student at CREATIS, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (France).
Awards and Recognitions
- In November 2024, he obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for the role of Associate Professor in the sector 09/H1 Sistemi di Elaborazione dell'Informazione.
- In December 2023, he obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for the role of Associate Professor in the sector 01/B1 Informatica.
- In September 2024, he received the Best Paper Award for the paper titled "Beyond Boundaries: Capturing Social Segregation on Hypernetworks," presented at the 16th International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2024).
Research Areas and Academic Service
His research interests focus primarily on three main areas:
- Complex and social network analysis,
- Artificial intelligence,
- Internet of Things.
He is (co)author of more than 50 articles in top-tier international scientific journals, conferences, and books. He has served as a reviewer for over 45 international scientific journals, including IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, Expert Systems with Applications, Knowledge-Based Systems, and Nonlinear Dynamics. He is currently a member of the editorial board of several international scientific journals, including Computation, Frontiers in Internet of Things, and Frontiers in Medical Engineering. Additionally, he has served and continues to serve as Guest Editor for several “special issues” in various international scientific journals.
He is a member of the CS-Lab, a laboratory within the Department of Information Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics at the University of Salerno. The CS-Lab focuses on research topics such as algorithms and games, network science, and knowledge reasoning and representation.
Teaching Activities
- He taught the course titled "Computer and Data Science Innovation in Multidisciplinary Areas: Emerging Models and Paradigms in Network Science" (12 hours, Academic Year 2023-2024) as part of the PhD program in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Calabria.
- He taught the course titled "Towards Graph Machine Learning" (12 hours, Academic Year 2021-2022) as part of the PhD program in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Calabria.
- He has delivered over 600 hours of teaching in various undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Among the courses taught are Fundamentals of Computer Science, Object-Oriented Programming, and Algorithms and Data Structures, in addition to the courses currently taught at the University of Salerno.
Organizational and Scientific Committee Activities
- He has served as General and Program Chair for several international conferences and workshops, including: International Workshop on Theory and Applications of Hypernetwork Science (HyperSCI 2024), International Workshop on HYbrid Models for Coupling Deductive and Inductive ReAsoning (HYDRA 2024/23/22), International Workshop on Hybrid Intelligence for Internet of Everything Models and Implementations (HIEMI 2025/24/23/22), International Conference on Visual Pattern Extraction and Recognition for Cultural Heritage Understanding (VIPERC 2023/22), and Affective-Health 2023.
- He has been a member of the Technical Program Committee for several international conferences and workshops, including: European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI), International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), International Conference on Behavioural and Social Computing (BESC), International Conference on Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing (ISM), International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine (IEEE BIBM), and CompleNet.
- He reviewed the international project titled "Scalable Sketch-Based Algorithms for Comparative Genomics," submitted to the FONDECYT Research Initiation Project Competition 2024 on behalf of the National Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation of Chile.
- He reviewed the international project titled "Embedding Time-Frequency Transformations in Deep Neural Networks for Enhancing EEG Pattern Identification," submitted to the FONDECYT Research Initiation Project Competition 2024 on behalf of the National Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation of Chile.
- He reviewed the international project titled "Computation of Representative Strings," submitted to the 2022 Initiation into Research FONDECYT on behalf of the National Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation of Chile.
