Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO ATTAIN B2/C1 LEVEL OF THE EUROPEAN REFERENCE FRAMEWORK AND TO ENCOURAGE THEIR CRITICAL THINKING. THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND CONFIDENTLY USE SPECIALIST LANGUAGES RELATING TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. HE/SHE WILL ALSO ACQUIRE THE APPROPRIATE TOOLS TO APPLY THE STRATEGIES INHERENT TO LINGUISTICS TO THE PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF DISCOURSE MODELS AND SPECIALISED TEXTS RELATING TO ISSUES IN THE POLITICAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO POLITICAL DISCOURSE AND INCLUSIVE DISCOURSE.
THE SPANISH LANGUAGE WITHIN THE MEDIA WILL BE ANALYSED, EXAMINING IN PARTICULAR THE LANGUAGE OF POLITICAL COMMUNICATION AND INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE. THE ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THESE LANGUAGES WILL BE ANALYSED FIRST FROM A THEORETICAL POINT OF VIEW AND THEN WITH PRACTICAL APPLICATION. THE FINAL OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO INDUCE A CRITICAL REFLECTION ON THE LINGUISTIC AND RHETORICAL MECHANISMS INVOLVED IN THIS TYPE OF COMMUNICATION, BOTH AT A LEXICAL AND MORPHO-SYNTACTIC LEVEL. THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND CRITICALLY ANALYSE SPECIALISED TEXTS RELATING TO THE SPANISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS AND TO APPLY SPECIFIC METHODOLOGIES OF LINGUISTIC AND MULTIMODAL ANALYSIS TO AUTHENTIC TEXTS OF VARIOUS TYPES. THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO COLLECT, INTERPRET AND PROCESS SPECIALISED LINGUISTIC INFORMATION USEFUL FOR MAKING AUTONOMOUS JUDGEMENTS ON POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ISSUES. THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE INFORMATION, IDEAS, PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS IN SPANISH WITH LANGUAGE PROPERTY EVEN IN SPECIALISED CONTEXTS. THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND MAKE APPROPRIATE USE OF TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTERISED SOURCES AND INDEPENDENTLY UNDERTAKE THE NEXT STAGE OF SPANISH LANGUAGE STUDY.
Prerequisites
KNOWLEDGE OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE AT B1 LEVEL OF THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK. MODULE 1 IS INTRODUCTORY TO MODULE 2.

MODULE 1:
THE PROGRAMME WILL FOCUS ON CURRENT ISSUES AND THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF SPANISH POLITICAL DISCOURSE WILL BE STUDIED. FURTHERMORE, THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF POPULISM AS A DISCURSIVE STYLE WILL BE STUDIED AND THE DEBATE ON INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE WILL BE PRESENTED. TO THIS END, THE MAIN TEXTUAL TYPOLOGIES, SOME DISCIPLINES OF PRAGMATICS (DISCOURSE ANALYSIS, CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS, RELEVANCE THEORY, ETC.) WILL BE STUDIED, AND RHETORICAL DISCOURSE, THE DIFFERENT PERSUASIVE STYLES AND THE RELATED ARGUMENTATION THEORY WILL BE ANALYSED. (30H LECTURE + 8H TUTORIALS). SEMINARS AND INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES WILL BE OFFERED (4H).

MODULE 2:
IN CONTINUITY WITH THE WORK CARRIED OUT DURING THE FIRST MODULE, THE PROGRAMME INCLUDES BOTH IN-DEPTH STUDY AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON THE CHOSEN THEMES OF THE COURSE, AS WELL AS WRITING AND ORAL PRESENTATION ACTIVITIES FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (30H LECTURE + 8H TUTORIALS). SEMINARS AND INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES WILL BE OFFERED (4H).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES (30 HOURS PER MODULE), IN-CLASS EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK (8 HOURS PER MODULE) AND SPECIALISED SEMINARS (4 HOURS PER MODULE). THE LECTURES WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF RHETORICAL, PERSUASIVE AND ARGUMENTATIVE LANGUAGE. THE EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED. THE SPECIALISED SEMINARS WILL ALLOW IN-DEPTH STUDY OF SPECIFIC TOPICS INHERENT TO THE COURSE OF STUDY.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST (LASTING ONE HOUR) WILL CONSIST OF A PAPER OR PRESENTATION ON ONE OF THE COURSE TOPICS. THE ORAL TEST (20 MINUTES) WILL ASSESS THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO ILLUSTRATE THE CONTENT OF THE PAPER OR PRESENTATION WITH EASE AND LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS AND PERSONALISE IT. THE FINAL MARK, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS, WILL RESULT FROM THESE ABILITIES. BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND MODULE, THERE WILL BE AN INTER-COURSE TEST WITH THE SAME CHARACTERISTICS AS THE FINAL TEST AND WHICH WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR THE FINAL ASSESSMENT.
