Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE BASIC COGNITIVE TOOLS NECESSARY FORUNDERSTANDING THE MAIN CHEMICAL PHENOMENA AND THE FORMATION OF ACULTURAL BACKGROUND TO CONTINUE LEARNING CHEMICAL SCIENCES. PROVIDE THEBASIC NOTIONS NECESSARY TO ESTABLISH THE QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS THATOCCUR IN CHEMICAL PROCESSES. INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO CHEMICAL LABORATORYPRACTICES.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT, IN A CONCISE AND APPLICATION-FRIENDLYWAY, WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC NOTIONS OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY AND TODEVELOP LOGICAL-DEDUCTIVE SKILLS IN SOLVING STOICHIOMETRY PROBLEMS.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ASSIMILATE THE THEORETICALKNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED AND TO BE ABLE TO SOLVE STOICHIOMETRY EXERCISES EVEN OFA CERTAIN COMPLEXITY.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
STUDENTS ARE GUIDED TO LEARN CRITICALLY AND RESPONSIBLY EVERYTHING THAT ISEXPLAINED TO THEM IN CLASS AND TO ENRICH THEIR JUDGMENT SKILLS THROUGH THESTUDY OF THE TEACHING MATERIAL INDICATED BY THE TEACHER.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE COURSE WILL TEND TO FAVOR THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO EXPLAIN THE KNOWLEDGEACQUIRED IN A CLEAR AND RIGOROUS WAY. AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENTMUST BE ABLE TO CORRECTLY STATE DEFINITIONS, PROBLEMS AND THEOREMSREGARDING THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE ITSELF.
LEARNING ABILITY
THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A BASICKNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRY. IN PARTICULAR, THE AIM IS TODEVELOP THE ABILITY TO DEAL WITH THE STUDY OF CHEMISTRY BY REFERRING TO THESCIENTIFIC METHOD OF INVESTIGATION, DEVELOPING LOGICAL-DEDUCTIVE SKILLS ALSOBY SOLVING STOICHIOMETRY PROBLEMS, AND TRYING TO CONVEY INTEREST INLABORATORY PRACTICE. THIS WILL SERVE TO ACQUIRE THE METHODOLOGIES NECESSARYTO ACHIEVE A GOOD LEVEL OF AUTONOMY REGARDING THE ANALYSIS OF BOTHPRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL SITUATIONS.

KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY LEARNED IN THE HIGHSCHOOL.

-ATOMIC THEORIES. THE STRUCTURE OF ATOMS, QUANTUM NUMBERS, AND AUFBAU.ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATIONS (8 HOURS)
-PERIODIC TABLE, CHEMICAL BONDS: COVALENT BOND, IONIC BOND, METALLIC BOND,NOMENCLATURE, WEAK BONDS (10 HOURS)
-STATES OF MATTER: GAS (KINETIC THEORY), LIQUIDS AND SOLIDS AND THEIRPROPERTIES. SOLUTIONS, COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES (12 HOURS)
- CHEMICAL KINETICS.THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON REACTION RATES.CHEMICALEQUILIBRIUM: PRINCIPES, EQUILIBRIUM IN GAS PHASE, EQUILIBRIUM IN SOLUTION, WEAKACIDS AND BASES, SALT HYDROLYSIS, SOLUBILITY EQUILIBRIUM (14 HOURS)
- INTRODUCTION TO THERMODYNAMICS. THE 1ST AND THE 2ND LAW OFTHERMODYNAMICS. THE GIBBS FREE ENERGY. ELECTROCHEMISTRY: ELECTROLYSIS ANDLAWS OF FARADAY.BELECTROCHEMICAL CELLS. (10 HOURS)

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE (120 HOURS) IS DIVIDED INTO LESSONS AND EXERCISES AS FOLLOWS:
LESSONS (6 CFU, 48 HOURS).
EXERCISES (6 CFU, 72 HOURS).
TO ATTEND THEORETICAL LESSONS IS NOT MANDATORY BUT STRONGLY SUGGESTED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEACHING IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM THAT IS EVALUATED IN THIRTY.
THE EXAM CONSISTS IN AN ORAL EXAMINATION, WHICH MUST BE PRECEDED BY A POSITIVE MARK FOR THE WRITTEN EXAM OF STECHIOMETRY.
THE WRITTEN TEST INVOLVES THE RESOLUTION OF AT LEAST 4 STECHIOMETRIC EXERCISES. THE TEST TAKES PLACE BEFORE THE ORAL TEST AND IS CONSIDERED TO BEOVERCOME WITH THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE MINIMUM PRESCRIBED SCORE. THEWRITTEN TEST USUALLY LASTS NOT LESS THAN 120 MINUTES AND IS AIMED AT VERIFYINGTHE ABILITY TO PROPERLY APPLY THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE, THE ABILITY TOUNDERSTAND THE PROPOSED PROBLEMS.
STUDENTS ATTENDING THE COURSE HAVE THE CHANCE OF TAKING THREE WRITTENTESTS, WHOSE POSITIVE RESULTS, CAN BE WORTH THE EXEMPTION OF THE FINALWRITTEN TEST.
THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THETHEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE TEACHING PROGRAM AND ISINTENDED TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIREDBY THE STUDENT AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY BY USING THE
APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY ORGANIZE THEEXHIBITION ON THE SAME SUBJECTS WITH A THEORETICAL CONTENT.
MINIMUM SCORE (18/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH SUPERFICIALKNOWLEDGE AND LIMITED COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS SUFFICIENT CLARITY SKILLS.
MAXIMUM SCORE (30/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH DEEP KNOWLEDGEAND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS RIGOROUS CLARITY SKILLS AND GOODDEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS
SCORE OF 30/30 CUM LAUDE WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH EXCELLENTKNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS EXCELLENT CLARITY SKILLS AND DEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS.
