Objectives
STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO CRITICALLY ANALYSE THE STRUCTURAL RESISTENCE OF MACHINE COMPONENTS, UNDERGOING STATIC AND FATIGUE LOADS.
IN PARTICULAR, THE STUDENT WILL LEARN HOW TO:
- ANALYSE THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF STRUCTURES UNDERGOING STATIC OR DYNAMIC LOADS;
- CALCULATE STRESSES AND DISPLACEMENTS IN SIMPLE STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS (BEAMS, SHAFT, ETC.) AND POINT OUT THE CORRESPONDING SAFETY MARGIN;
- ASSESS THE STRUCTURAL RESISTANCE OF MECHANICAL COMPONENTS UNDERGOING STATIC, THERMAL AND FATIGUE LOADS;
- SIZE A MECHANICAL COMPONENT, CONSIDERED AS PART OF A COMPLEX ASSEMBLY, IN COMPLIANCE WITH DESIGN CONSTRAINTS AND TECHNICAL NORMS;
- APPLY DIAGNOSIS TECHNIQUES FOR FAILURE MODE ASSESSMENT IN A MECHANICAL COMPONENT AND SCHEDULE THE NEEDED MAINTENANCE;
- ANALYSE THE DAMAGING PHENOMENA UNDERMINING IN SERVICE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCES OF MATERIALS USED IN ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS, WITH ALLOWANCE FOR THEIR MUTUAL INTERDEPENDENCE, MICROSTRUCTURE AND APPLIED HEAT/MECHANICAL TREATMENTS.
THE MAIN SKILLS DEVELOPED BY THE STUDENTS WILL BE DEPLOYED IN A GROUP WORK AIMED AT DESIGNING A COMPLEX MECHANICAL ASSEMBLY, WITH CONSIDERATION OF ALL THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED ASPECTS.
Prerequisites
AS A PREREQUISITE TO PROPERLY BENEFIT OF THE COURSE CONTENT, STUDENTS MUST OVERCOME EXAMINATIONS IN THE FOLLOWING PROPEDEUTIC COURSES:
-TECHNICAL DRAWING
-RATIONAL MECHANICS AND STRUCTURAL MECHANICS
-MANUFACTURING (THIS PREREQUISITE IS OPTIONAL)
-MECHANICS OF MACHINES

• VISIT TO THE LABORATORY OF THE MACHINE DESIGN GROUP (2 H)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS BASED ON 120 HOURS OF THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE LESSONS (12 CFU). IN PARTICULAR, 2 OUT OF 120 HOURS ARE SPENT IN THE LABORATORY OF THE MACHINE DESIGN GROUP WHERE THE AVAILABLE STATIC AND FATIGUE MACHINES WILL BE ILLUSTRATED TO THE STUDENTS; THE REMAINING 118 HOURS WILL BE EROGATED IN THE CLASS ROOM AND SPLIT IN 80 HOURS OF THEORY AND 38 OF APPLICATIONS (EXERCISES)
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM WHICH IS BASED ON A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL EXAM.
THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN EXAM IS SCHEDULED, WHILE THE DATE OF THE ORAL EXAM IS DEFINED BY THE TEACHER FROM TIME TO TIME (TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE SCHEDULING OF THE OTHER EXAMS OF THE III YEAR, II SEMESTER).
IN ORAL TEST THE STUDENT WILL ANSWER: ASPECTS INHERENT TO THE PROJECT, WHICH, EVEN IF CARRIED OUT IN GROUPS, WILL BE DISCUSSED INDIVIDUALLY; ASPECTS INHERENT TO THE WRITTEN TEST; THEORETICAL QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE WHOLE OF THE PROGRAM.
THE WRITTEN TEST IS BASED ON THE NUMERICAL RESOLUTION OF AN EXERCISE ON THE VERIFICATION/FATIGUE DESIGN OF MECHANICAL COMPONENTS OR ASSEMBLIES AND IS PREPARATORY FOR ACCESS TO THE RELATED ORAL TEST.
THE WRITTEN TEST REMAINS VALID WITHIN THE EXAM SESSION IN WHICH IT IS PASSED.
WITH REFERENCE TO THE PROJECT RELATED TO THE SECOND PART OF THE EXAM WE SPECIFY THE FOLLOWING:
1)EACH GROUP OF STUDENTS, COMPOSED OF A MAXIMUM OF FOUR STUDENTS, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SECOND SEMESTER IS ASSIGNED AN EXERCISE TOPIC CONSISTING OF A MACHINE OR A FUNCTIONAL GROUP OF MACHINE ORGANS;
2) EACH GROUP RECEIVES TOGETHER WITH THE ESSENTIAL DATA FOR THE DESIGN A GRAPHIC SCHEME OF THE OBJECT TO BE DRAWN. WHEN THE TEACHER CONSIDERS THAT THE THEME HAS BEEN EXHAUSTIVELY AND CORRECTLY CARRIED OUT, HE/SHE WILL DATE AND SIGN THE WRITTEN REPORT AND ALL THE TABLES OF THE GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION.
3) THE COMPLETION BY THE END OF THE CURRENT ACADEMIC YEAR OF THE ASSIGNED THEME, PROVEN BY THE TEACHER'S SIGNATURE, ENTITLES THE STUDENT TO BE ADMITTED TO THE EXAM IN THE SESSIONS OF THE CURRENT AND FOLLOWING ACADEMIC YEAR. THE STUDENT WHO FAILS TO DEVELOP THE PROJECT BY THE END OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR, WILL BE ASSIGNED A NEW TRACK AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
FUNDAMENTAL IN THE FORMATION OF THE GRADE IS THE ABILITY 'TO REASON EXHIBITED BY THE STUDENT ON THE TOPICS PROVIDED TO THE COURSE.
AMONG THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR PASSING THE EXAM, A RELEVANT ROLE IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE ABILITY TO SOLVE STATIC AND UNIAXIAL AND MULTIAXIAL FATIGUE OF ELEMENTARY STRUCTURES, WITH REFERENCE, AMONG OTHER THINGS, TO "REASONABLE" NUMERICAL EVALUATIONS (E.G., ARE PARTICULARLY SERIOUS ERRORS OF ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE, WITHOUT THE STUDENT NOTICING IT, ON THE NUMERICAL QUESTIONS PROPOSED).
THE FINAL GRADE IS AN AVERAGE OF THE GRADES OBTAINED IN THE TWO PARTS OF THE EXAM.
