MODULE 1 BIOMATERIALS: CHEMICAL STRUCTURES AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES THE COURSE AIMS TO DESCRIBE THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BIOMATERIALS AND THEIR PHYSICAL PROPERTIES. IN DETAIL THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURES OF METALS, ALLOYS, CERAMIC MATERIALS, COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND POLYMERIC MATERIALS WILL BE DESCRIBED. THE IMPERFECTIONS PRESENT IN THE SOLIDS, PUNCTUAL DEFECTS AND DISLOCATIONS WILL BE DESCRIBED, HIGHLIGHTING HOW THEIR PRESENCE ALTERS THE PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS THEMSELVES, FOR EXAMPLE INCREASING THEIR RESISTANCE. THE MAIN TECHNIQUES OF CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MATERIALS WILL BE BRIEFLY INTRODUCED AND IN PARTICULAR THE TECHNIQUES FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES OF SOLIDS AND THE MICROSCOPIC ONES AIMED FOR EXAMPLE AT THE DETERMINATION OF GRAIN SIZES WILL BE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO DESCRIBING HOW THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE MICROSTRUCTURE MODIFIES THE PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS THEMSELVES SUCH AS FOR EXAMPLE THE THERMAL PROPERTIES (THERMAL CAPACITY, THERMAL EXPANSION, THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY) AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES. THE MAIN SKILLS DEVELOPED BY THE STUDENT WILL BE: THE ABILITY TO KNOW THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PROPERTIES OF THE DIFFERENT MATERIALS. MODULE 2 BIOMATERIALS:MEDICAL DEVICES AND INTERACTION WITH BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT WILL CONCERN: THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO DESCRIBE THE MOST WIDESPREAD AND USED MATERIALS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS. IN THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES INVOLVED IN THE INTERACTION WITH THE BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS OF THESE MATERIALS WILL BE DESCRIBED. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE CLASSES OF MATERIALS USED IN MEDICINE (CERAMICS, METALS, POLYMERS, COMPOSITES) IN THEIR MOST WIDESPREAD APPLICATIONS WILL ALSO BE DESCRIBED. THE MOST IMPORTANT THERAPEUTIC DEVICES (ARTICULATION AND DENTAL PROSTHESES, CARDIOVASCULAR DEVICES, CATHETERS, DEVICES FOR OPHTHALMOLOGY, NEPHROLOGY, APPLICATIONS FOR CONTROLLED DRUG RELEASE, ETC.) AND THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH IMPLANTATION (RESPONSE OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM, INFECTIONS, TECHNIQUES OF STERILIZATION, ETC.) TOGETHER WITH THEIR POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, WILL ALSO BE DESCRIBED. THE MAIN SKILLS DEVELOPED BY THE STUDENT WILL BE: THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE ABILITY TO DISCUSS AND ANALYZE PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE INTERACTION BETWEEN MATERIALS AND BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND AT THE SAME TIME TO RECOGNIZE THE APPLICATIVE POTENTIAL OF A MATERIAL IN THE BIOMEDICAL FIELD |

1) FIRST MODULE (BIOMATERIALS: CHEMICAL STRUCTURES AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES; PROF. SS P. RIZZO): STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MATERIALS AND THE RELATIVE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES. CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES OF METALS, ALLOYS, CERAMIC MATERIALS, COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND POLYMERIC MATERIALS. IMPERFECTIONS PRESENT IN SOLIDS, TIMELY DEFECTS AND DISCOVERY HIGHLIGHTING AS THEIR PRESENCE ALTER THE PROPERTIES OF THE SAME MATERIALS EXTENDING FOR EXAMPLE THE RESISTANCE. THE COURSE IS ESSENTIALLY CONSTITUTED FROM FRONT LESSONS. VISITS TO MATERIAL CHARACTERIZATION LABORATORIES ARE ALSO PLANNED, DURING WHICH THE MAIN INSTRUMENTS USED IN THIS FIELD WILL BE SHOWN AND DESCRIBED. |

THE EXAMINATION HAS THE AIM OF ASSESSING THE REACHING OF THE FORMATIVE OBJECTIVES BY THE STUDENT. THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEACHING IS VERIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAMINATION WITH EVALUATION IN 30TH. THE EXAMINATION SHALL INCLUDE TWO ORAL TESTS, ONE AT THE END OF EACH MODULE. EACH TEST SHALL BE EVALUATED IN 30TH AND SHALL BE PASSED WITH A MINIMUM OF 18/30. THE FINAL MARK IS THE AVERAGE OF THE VOTES RECORDED IN EACH ORAL TEST. ALTERNATIVELY, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE A SINGLE ORAL EXAMINATION ON THE TOPICS PRESENTED IN BOTH MODULES. |
