Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE ARE SET WITHIN THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE DEGREE PROGRAM THAT SHALL INCLUDE THE TRAINING OF A PROFESSIONAL EXPERT IN THE FIELD OF MONITORING, ASSESSMENT, MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS AND LAND MANAGEMENT.

INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT MODULE (PROF VENDITTO):
THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THIS TEACHING MODULE IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE TRAINING OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL OPERATOR WHO IS AN EXPERT IN THE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF WASTE MANAGEMENT, FROM LEGAL TO TECHNICAL INSTALLATION.
IN DETAIL, THE PARTICULAR OBJECTIVE OF THE MODULE IS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH THE KNOWLEDGE, AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THEM, REGARDING THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF WASTE MANAGEMENT, BOTH IN TERMS OF THE REGULATORY ASPECTS IN THE ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN CONTEXT, BOTH THE THEORETICAL ASSUMPTIONS AND THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE WASTE CYCLE ACTIONS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR NO 1)
THE AIM OF THIS TEACHING MODULE IS TO ALLOW THE STUDENT TO GET TO KNOW, WITH THE SUPPORT OF ADVANCED TEXTBOOKS, THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF WASTE MANAGEMENT REGARDING:
- REGULATORY ASPECTS (IN RELATION TO THE ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN CONTEXT)
- THE THEORETICAL ASSUMPTIONS AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE WASTE CYCLE ACTIONS.
IT IS ALSO THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE TO GIVE THE STUDENT THE TOOLS TO DEVELOP AND/OR APPLY INNOVATIVE IDEAS, POSSIBLY ALSO IN RESEARCH FIELDS, FOR THE SETTING UP OF A CORRECT WASTE MANAGEMENT CYCLE, RESPECTING REGULATORY ASPECTS IN A LOGIC OF LOWERING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS. THE AIM OF THE TEACHING MODULE IS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO DEVISE AND SUPPORT ARGUMENTS THAT ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING ISSUES:
- A CORRECT SETTING (OR EVALUATION) OF A WASTE MANAGEMENT CYCLE ADHERING TO LEGISLATION AND CURRENT AVAILABLE PLANT TECHNOLOGIES
- THE USE OF THE INNOVATIVE APPROACH BASED ON THE "LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT" FOR THE CHOICE OF THE PLANT TO BE USED IN THE WASTE MANAGEMENT CYCLE THAT MINIMIZES THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL ALLOW THE STUDENT TO SOLVE PROBLEMS, IN NEW (UNFAMILIAR) AND INTERDISCIPLINARY AREAS, RELATED TO WASTE MANAGEMENT, BOTH FROM A REGULATORY AND TECHNICAL POINT OF VIEW.

THE TEACHING MODULE AIMS TO ENABLE THE STUDENT TO COLLECT AND INTERPRET RELEVANT DATA RELATED TO THE ISSUES FOR A CORRECT SETTING (OR EVALUATION) OF A WASTE MANAGEMENT CYCLE THAT IS FULLY COMPLIANT WITH THE LEGISLATION AND COMPATIBLE WITH THE CURRENT AVAILABLE PLANT TECHNOLOGY. IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY INTEGRATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN ORDER TO BETTER MANAGE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE TECHNIQUES FOR WASTE COLLECTION, TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL, MAKING JUDGMENTS, EVEN WITH PARTIAL DATA, BASED ON THE "LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT" APPROACH OF WASTE MANAGEMENT PROCESSES.

THE TEACHING MODULE WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO COMMUNICATE CONCEPTS AND CONCLUSIONS, AS WELL AS THE UNDERLYING RATIONALE, RESULTING FROM THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT, REGARDING WASTE MANAGEMENT, TO SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST INTERLOCUTORS, BOTH AS REGARDS THE REGULATORY ASPECTS, AND AS REGARDS THE THEORETICAL ASSUMPTIONS AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE ACTIONS OF THE WASTE MANAGEMENT CYCLE.

IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY INTEGRATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN ORDER TO BETTER MANAGE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE ISSUES RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERIZATIONS NECESSARY FOR THE QUANTIFICATION OF HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS RELATED TO THE PRESENCE OF POLLUTANTS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMPARTMENTS, FORMULATING A CONCEPTUAL MODEL OF THE SITE, AS WELL AS THE ASSESSMENT OF BEST REMEDIATION TECHNIQUES AIMED AT ELIMINATING POLLUTION OR REDUCING CONCENTRATIONS OF POLLUTANTS TO ACCEPTABLE VALUES DEFINED ON THE BASIS OF A RISK ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY.

LECTURES ON THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE COURSE MODULE AND GUIDED TOURS TO WASTE MANAGEMENT PLANTS
THE ATTENDANCE OF THE LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM IS NOT OBLIGATORY, THAT OF THE EXERCISES AND VISITS TO THE PLANTS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED


REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES MODULE
THE COURSE CONTAINS 56 HOURS OF TEACHING (6 CFU) THAT WILL BE ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS:
-FRONT CLASSES ON ALL THE LECTURE TOPICS THAT TAKE PLACE IN THE CLASSROOM WITH THE USE OF SLIDES PROJECTION (32 HOURS)
- PRACTICAL EXERCICES OF ABSOLUTE RISK ASSESSMENT WITH SOFTWARE PROGRAMS AND ANALYSIS OF ADR AND CHARACTERIZATION PLAN REPORTS(24 HOURS)
Verification of learning
WASTE MANAGEMENT MODULE:
ORAL EXAM LASTING 45 MINUTES.
EACH STUDENT WILL HAVE TO ANSWER A SERIES OF QUESTIONS THAT COVER ALL THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE.
THE AIM OF THE TEST IS TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL ASSUMPTIONS UNDERLYING WASTE MANAGEMENT FROM BOTH A LEGAL (IN THE ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN CONTEXT) AND TECHNICAL PLANT POINTS OF VIEW. SIMILARLY, THE FINAL EXAM INTENDS TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO SET UP (OR EVALUATE) A WASTE MANAGEMENT CYCLE THAT COMPLIES WITH THE LEGISLATION AND IS BASED ON THE MOST CURRENT SYSTEMS IN THE SECTOR.
THE MINIMUM MARK FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30, AND IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL ASSUMPTIONS THAT INSPIRE THE WASTE MANAGEMENT CYCLE FROM BOTH A LEGAL AND TECHNICAL PLANT POINT OF VIEW.
THE MAXIMUM VOTE (30/30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL ASSUMPTIONS THAT INSPIRE THE WASTE MANAGEMENT CYCLE FROM BOTH A LEGAL AND TECHNICAL PLANT POINT OF VIEW AND IS ABLE TO DESCRIBE A CYCLE IN DETAIL OF WASTE MANAGEMENT THAT COMPLIES WITH THE LEGISLATION AND BASED ON THE MOST CURRENT PLANT ENGINEERING IN THE SECTOR.

REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES MODULE:
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES WILL BE CERTIFICATED THROUGH THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF AN EXAMINATION WITH A GRADE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS. THE EXAMANIATION WILL INCLUDE BOTH WRITING AND ORAL TESTS.
THE STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO PASS FIRST A WRITING TEST CONTAINING MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND OPEN QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE TEACHING PROGRAM TOPICS PRESENTED DURING THE LECTURES. A MINIMUM GRADE OF 18/30 IS REQUIRED FOR THE WRITING TEST WHICH SHOULD NORMALLY TAKE AT LEAST 60 MINUTES AND IT AIMS TO VERIFY THE ABILITY OF THE STUDENT TO CORRECTLY APPLY THE THEORICAL KNOWLEDGE AS WELL AS HIS CAPACITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS BEING FACED.
THE ORAL TEST WILL CONSIST IN AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON BOTH THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE PROGRAM IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE STUDENT, TO VERIFY HIS COMUNICATION SKILLS.
THE FINAL GRADE IS OBTAINED FROM THE MEAN OF BOTH GRADE TESTS AND THE FINAL MINIMUM GRADE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE EXAMINATION IS 18/30.
THE MINIMUM GRADE (18) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE ITALIAN LEGISLATION SPECIFIC TO THE REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES, TO THE CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES AND RISK ASSESMENT OF CONTAMINATED SITES, AS WELL AS TO THE MAIN REMEDIATION AND POLLUTANT CONTAINMENT TECNOLOGIES.
THE MAXIMUM GRADE (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE ITALIAN LEGISLATION SPECIFIC TO THE REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES,TO THE CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES OF CONTAMINATED SITES, AS WELL AS TO THE MAIN REMEDIATION AND POLLUTANT CONTAINMENT TECNOLOGIES.
HONOURS (LODE) MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO REACH A MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND WHO DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO APPLY INDEPENDENTLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS.
