CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHEMICAL AND CHEMICO-PHYSICAL BASIC NEEDED TO INTERPRET THE BEHAVIOR AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF MATTER IN RELATION TO THE MAJOR TECHNOLOGIES AND ENGINEERING ISSUES. THE STUDENT AT THE END OF THE COURSE WILL HAVE: • KNOWLEDGE OF THE ISSUES INHERENT IN THE STRUCTURE OF MATTER AND THE PRINCIPLES GOVERNING ITS CHEMICO-PHYSICAL TRANSFORMATIONS; • WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND CHEMICAL BOND; • WILL BE ABLE TO EVALUATE THE INFLUENCE OF OPERATIVE PARAMETERS (SUCH AS TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE) ON CHEMICAL REACTIONS; • WILL BE ABLE TO USE THE TOOLS FOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURE OF MATTER TO QUALITATIVELY CORRELATE ITS PROPERTIES (MELTING AND BOILING TEMPERATURE, VAPOR PRESSURE, ETC.) WITH THE STRUCTURE; • WILL BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY EVALUATE: - THE VALIDITY AND APPROXIMATION LIMITS OF THE INTERPRETATIVE MODELS OF PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE MATTER, DEPENDENTLY ON ITS STRUCTURE; - THE AREAS OF USE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY TO UNDERSTAND THE CRITERIA GOVERNING THE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF SUBSTANCES IN RELATION TO THEIR APPLICATIONS; • WILL BE ABLE TO SUPPORT CONVERSATIONS ON TOPICS RELATED TO THE CORE ASPECTS OF THE DISCIPLINE BY USING APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY, AND THE TOOLS OF MATHEMATICAL AND GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE MAIN PHENOMENA DESCRIBED |

TEACHING INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. DURING THE EXERCISES, STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO STOICHIOMETRY. THE RESOLUTION METHOD CONSISTS OF UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM, SCHEDULING THE SOLUTION, AND FINALLY RESOLUTION. THIS LAST PHASE PROMOTES THE ABILITY OF EVALUATING THE REASONABLENESS OF THE RESPONSE AND OF VERIFYING CONSISTENCY WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY. |

THE EXAM AIMED AT EVALUATING THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO HAVE LEARNED THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE MATERIAL STRUCTURE BY HAVING ACQUIRED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH AND A MICROSCOPIC APPROACH TO THE STUDY OF THE PROPERTIES OF MATTER AND ITS TRANSFORMATIONS. THE MARK IS EXPRESSED IN A SCALE FROM 18 TO 30 WITH POSSIBLE LAUDE, WILL DEPEND ON THE ACQUIRED MATURITY ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE. FOR THE LAUDE, I TWILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSITION, IN TERMS OF THE USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE, AND OF THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT BEING DEMONSTRATED. IT WILL BE PROPOSED A WRITTEN TEST ON STOICHIOMETRY QUESTIONS (PART A) ON: REDOX REACTION WITH LIMITING REAGENT AND GAS PRODUCTION (5 POINTS), HOMOGENEOUS EQUILIBRIUM IN GAS PHASE (5 POINTS), COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES (3 POINTS), ACID-BASE EQUILIBRIUM (3 POINTS), GALVANIC CELL (4 POINTS); AND THEORY QUESTIONS (PART B) ON: STATUS DIAGRAMS (2 POINTS), STRONG CHEMICAL BONDS (2 POINTS), MOLECULAR GEOMETRIES (2 POINTS), LE CHATELIER PRINCIPLE (2 POINTS), SOLID STATE (2 POINTS). TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE ORAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST REACH AT LEAST 12 POINTS IN PART A) AND 4 POINTS IN PART B) THE ORAL TEST WILL CONSIST OF AN INTERVIEW WHERE THE GAPS IDENTIFIED IN THE WRITTEN TEST WILL BE FILLED. FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE EXHAUSTIVELY COMPLETED ALL OF THE PROPOSED QUESTIONS, BOTH IN PART A AND PART B, A QUESTION OF PART B WILL BE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. DURING THE COURSE IT CAN BE POSSIBLE TO DO TWO PARTIAL TESTS, RESPECTIVELY AFTER HALF THE LESSONS AND AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. THE EVALUATION OF THE TWO TESTS WILL BE EXPRESSED IN THIRTY AND THE FINAL SCORE WILL BE GIVEN BY THE WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE TWO TESTS. THE FIRST TEST WILL CONCURR AT 40%, THE SECOND WILL CONCURR AT 60% OF THE FINAL MARK. IF THE FINAL SCORE EXCEEDS 18/30, THE STUDENT MAY BE CONSIDERED EXEMPTED FROM THE WRITTEN TEST. THE EXONERATION WILL BE VALID ONLY TO THE ONE AFTER THE EXAM SESSION FOLLOWING THAT OF THE TEACHING. |
