Objectives
CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHEMICAL AND CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL FOUNDATIONS NECESSARY TO INTERPRET THE BEHAVIOR AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE SUBJECT IN RELATION TO THE MAIN TECHNOLOGIES AND ENGINEERING PROBLEMS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

• KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURE OF ATOMS AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS AND THE RESULTING MOLECULES, WITH RELATED CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
• KNOWLEDGE OF THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ATOMS AND BETWEEN MOLECULES TO UNDERSTAND THE VARIOUS STATES OF AGGREGATION OF MATTER (SOLID, LIQUID, GAS) AND THEIR PHASE TRANSITIONS

- STOICHIOMETRIC CALCULATIONS: LIMITING REAGENT. (3 HOURS EXERCISES)
- STATES OF MATTER: SOLIDS; GAS; LIQUIDS. (4 HOURS THEORY + 3 HOURS EXERCISES)
- PHASE TRANSFORMATIONS AND PHYSICAL EQUILIBRIA. (4 HOURS THEORY + 2 HOURS EXERCISES)
- SOLUTIONS AND THEIR PROPERTIES. COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES. HOMOGENEOUS CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIA IN THE GAS PHASE. IONIC EQUILIBRIA IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION: ACIDS AND BASES. (4 HOURS THEORY + 4 HOURS EXERCISES)
- ELECTROCHEMISTRY. THE BATTERIES. NERNST EQUATION. CALCULATION OF THE F.E.M. OF A PILE AND DETERMINATION OF THE SPONTANEOUS DIRECTION OF THE REDOX REACTION THAT FEEDS IT. (4 HOURS THEORY + 3 HOURS EXERCISES)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. DURING THE EXERCISES THE STUDENT IS ASKED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO STOICHIOMETRY. THE RESOLUTION METHOD CONSISTS OF UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM, PLANNING THE SOLUTION, AND FINALLY SOLVING. THIS LAST PHASE PROMOTES THE ABILITY TO EVALUATE THE REASONABLENESS OF THE RESPONSE AND TO VERIFY THE COHERENCE WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY
Verification of learning
THE EXAM AIMED AT ASSESSING THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE STRUCTURE OF MATTER AND ITS TRANSFORMATIONS, DEPENDING ON THE OPERATING PARAMETERS CONSIDERED.
IT CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST PREPARATORY TO AN ORAL INTERVIEW.
THE WRITTEN TEST PROPOSES TO THE STUDENT STOICHIOMETRY EXERCISES ON: CALCULATIONS RELATED TO MASS BALANCES AND CHARGE IN REDOX REACTIONS; EVALUATION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANT OR OF THE EQUILIBRIUM COMPOSITION OF A HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE OF COMPOUNDS IN THE GASEOUS PHASE; EVALUATION OF THE PH OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF AN ACID OR A BASE; EVALUATION OF THE MOLECULAR MASS OF NON-VOLATILE SOLUTES IN DILUTE SOLUTIONS, THROUGH THE USE OF COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES; DETERMINATION OF THE ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE OF A GALVANIC CELL AND DETERMINATION OF THE SPONTANEOUS DIRECTION OF THE REDOX REACTION THAT FEEDS THEM.
THE ORAL EXAM WILL AIM TO FILL ANY GAPS FOUND IN THE WRITTEN TEST, AND TO VERIFY THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL BASES THAT GOVERN THE CHEMICAL PROCESSES AND THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL.
DURING THE COURSE IT IS POSSIBLE TO PERFORM TWO PARTIAL TESTS, RESPECTIVELY AFTER HALF OF THE LESSONS AND AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. EACH TEST WILL WEIGH 50% ON THE OVERALL VOTE. IF THE VOTE IS HIGHER THAN 18/30 THE STUDENT CAN BE CONSIDERED EXEMPT FROM THE WRITTEN TEST. THE EXONERATION WILL BE VALID ONLY FOR THE EXAMINATION SESSION AFTER THE ONE OF THE TEACHING.
THE FINAL GRADE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS WITH POSSIBLE PRAISE, WILL DEPEND ON THE GLOBAL MATURITY ACQUIRED ON THE COURSE CONTENTS.
IT WILL NOT BE MADE MEDIA WITH THE VOTE OF THE WRITTEN TEST.
IT IS A NECESSARY CONDITION FOR THE SUFFICIENCY OF THE ORAL KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMICAL BONDS, THE CLASSIFICATION OF SOLIDS, STATE DIAGRAMS AND PHASE TRANSITIONS, CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIA AND THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CHEMICAL SYSTEMS AT EQUILIBRIUM, OF THE BASIC SCHEME OF A CELL GALVANIC.
ACCOUNT WILL BE TAKEN OF:
• THE QUALITY OF EXPOSURE, IN TERMS OF USING APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE
• THE ABILITY OF CROSS-CORRELATION BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT TOPICS OF THE COURSE AND, WHERE POSSIBLE, WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES
• AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT DEMONSTRATED

THE STUDENT REACHES THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE IF HE IS ABLE TO FACE PROBLEMS (EVEN UNUSUAL OR NOT EXPRESSLY TREATED IN CLASS), MAKING THE RIGHT SIMPLIFICATIONS AND COMPLETING THE RESOLUTION IN ALL PARTS, WITH THE VERIFICATION OF THE HYPOTHESES MADE.
