Objectives
THIS MODULE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE MAIN ELEMENTS FOR UNDERSTANDING THE DEVELOPMENT IN THE ARTS OF ITALY (IN PARTICULAR OF OUR TERRITORY) AND EUROPE. ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE CREATION OF WORKS OF ART AND THEIR STYLISTIC ASPECTS, WHILE PROVIDING BASIC ELEMENTS FOR THE IDENTIFICATION, THEIR HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND THEIR CORRECT DESCRIPTION WITH SPECIALIST LANGUAGE. IN ADDITION, THE BASICS OF THE HISTORY OF COLLECTING AND MUSEUMS WILL BE PROVIDED, WITH SPECIFIC ATTENTION TO THE DEFINITION OF THE CURRENT FUNCTIONS OF THE MUSEUM INSTITUTION.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE CRITICAL TOOLS AND METHODS FOR THE STUDY OF WORKS OF ART, ALSO CONSIDERING THEIR EXHIBITION VALUE AND THE PLACES WHERE THEY ARE PRESERVED AND ENHANCED.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: AT THE END OF THE MODULE, STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE NEXT STEPS OF FURTHER STUDY IN MUSEOLOGY AND ART HISTORY.
MAKING JUDGMENTS: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DISCERN BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ART HISTORICAL ARTEFACTS AND THEIR CONTEXT OF PRODUCTION, CONSERVATION AND EXHIBITION USING SPECIFIC AND APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WHO HAVE FOLLOWED THE LESSONS AND STUDY SUGGESTIONS AND FURTHER READING CAREFULLY WILL BE ABLE TO EVALUATE AND DISCERN DIFFERENT TYPES OF WORKS OF ART AND UNDERSTAND THE FORMS AND PURPOSES OF THEIR EXHIBITION, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE ROLE AND HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM INSTITUTION.
LEARNING SKILLS: DURING THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE GUIDED IN THE USE OF BOTH TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES FOR RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF MUSEOLOGY AND MEDIEVAL, MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART HISTORY.

WHAT IS ART HISTORY? AND HOW ARE WORKS OF ART DESCRIBED AND INTERPRETED? THIS MODULE OFFERS A BASIC METHODOLOGICAL PATH TO TACKLE FUNDAMENTAL THEMES OF THE DISCIPLINE, THROUGH THE ILLUSTRATION OF SOME CONCRETE EXAMPLES SELECTED FROM A BROAD CHRONOLOGY – THAT IS FROM THE FOURTH TO THE 21ST CENTURY – AND THE USE OF UP-TO-DATE INTERPRETATIVE TOOLS.

THE MODULE IS ARTICULATED IN THREE SUB-MODULES:1 HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART: IN WHICH THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE TREATED: PERIODIZATION OF THE MIDDLE AGES; ARTISTIC TECHNIQUES IN THE PERIOD 300-1400 CIRCA AND TECHNICAL-ARTISTIC KNOWLEDGE; SUPPLY AND SYMBOLISM OF MATERIALS; PATRONAGE AND FRUITION.
2 HISTORY OF MODERN ART: IN WHICH THE FOLLOWING THEMES WILL BE ANALYZED: PERIODIZATION OF MODERN ART; ARTISTIC TECHNIQUES IN THE PERIOD 1400-1800 AND TECHNICAL-ARTISTIC KNOWLEDGE; SUPPLY AND SYMBOLISM OF MATERIALS; PATRONAGE AND FRUITION.

3 HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ART: IN WHICH THE MAIN CURRENTS AND ARTISTS OF THE LATE NINETEENTH AND EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURIES WILL BE ADDRESSED; THE METHODS OF PRODUCTION, CIRCULATION AND FRUITION OF WORKS THROUGH EXHIBITIONS AND ART MAGAZINES; LANGUAGES AND TECHNIQUES THROUGH READING EXERCISES.

Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION WILL TAKE PLACE IN TWO PHASES: 1) MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST ON TOPICS DEALT WITH DURING THE MODULE CONTAINING 16 QUESTIONS: EACH CORRECT ANSWER EQUALS 2 POINTS; THE TEST IS PASSED WITH A MINIMUM OF 9 CORRECT ANSWERS (18 POINTS); 2) INTERVIEW: THREE QUESTIONS TO WHICH THE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE TO ANSWER DEMONSTRATING TO MASTER THE TOPICS DEALT WITH DURING THE MODULE.
THE RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND OF THE INTERVIEW ARE EQUALLY IMPORTANT IN DETERMINING THE FINAL MARK (MINUMUM 18, MAX 30 CUM LAUDE).
