Objectives
THIS INTEGRATED COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES RELATED TO THE DESIGN, CONDUCT, DATA ANALYSIS, AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT OF OBSTETRIC-NURSING RESEARCH, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO EPIDEMIOLOGICAL MEASURES OF DISEASE RISK OR ASSOCIATION BETWEEN DISEASES AND RISK FACTORS, IN ORDER TO COLLABORATE, WITHIN THE SCOPE OF OBSTETRIC COMPETENCE, IN THE CONDUCT OF DESCRIPTIVE AND ANALYTICAL EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDIES.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL KNOW AND UNDERSTAND:
•METHODS FOR EVALUATING AND INTERPRETING THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE, SCIENTIFIC METHODS FOR INTERPRETING RESEARCH RESULTS IN THE OBSTETRIC, GYNECOLOGICAL, AND NEONATAL FIELDS, AND FOR LINKING RESEARCH PROCESSES TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE OBSTETRIC DISCIPLINE (MIDWIFERY).
•THE PRINCIPLES OF EPIDEMIOLOGICAL RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN THE OBSTETRIC-GYNECOLOGICAL AREA FOR THE EVALUATION OF HEALTHCARE INTERVENTIONS, THE MEASUREMENT OF OUTCOMES, AND THE LEVELS OF EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY OF SPECIFIC OBSTETRIC-GYNECOLOGICAL AND NEONATAL CARE ACTIVITIES.
•IT TOOLS FOR CONTINUOUS UPDATING AND INTERPRETATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE IN THEIR OWN DISCIPLINARY SECTOR AND RELATED FIELDS.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
•INTERPRET AND APPLY RESEARCH RESULTS TO OBSTETRIC, GYNECOLOGICAL, AND NEONATAL PRACTICE AND LINK RESEARCH PROCESSES TO THE THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE OBSTETRIC DISCIPLINE.
•COLLECT, ANALYZE, AND INTERPRET, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD, DATA FROM THE CLINICAL-CARE AREA FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES AND TO EVALUATE THE RESULTS OF CARE PROVIDED.
JUDGMENT UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
•MAKE DECISIONS THROUGH A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO PROBLEM-SOLVING FOR THE PATIENT BY EVALUATING THE AVAILABLE SCIENTIFIC STUDIES AND RESPECTING THE QUALITY OF CARE PROVIDED, USING RESEARCH TOOLS.
•DEMONSTRATE INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT ON THE APPLICATION OF VERIFICATION TOOLS TO MEASURE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PREVENTIVE INTERVENTIONS IMPLEMENTED.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
•MANAGE COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR A NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON.

Teaching Methods
The course includes lectures, in-class exercises on statistical data analysis and scientific and professional literature, and bibliographic research methodology workshops. The lectures will allow students to acquire knowledge of the research process in all its stages, using different methods and methodologies. The exercises will enable students to develop the essential skills and competencies for preparing a qualitative-quantitative research project, applicable to the specific fields of obstetric-nursing.
Participation in the activities is mandatory, and access to the exam requires attendance of at least 75% of the hours. Attendance will be verified using EasyAcademy software.
Verification of learning
Oral exam: the oral exam, lasting about 30 minutes, includes a practical problem-solving test, discussing the available methods and methodologies and defending the choice of those to apply, aimed at assessing the student's ability to independently develop and execute research in the obstetric-nursing field.
