Objectives
THE COURSE PROVIDES THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS AND SYSTEMS EMPLOYED IN THE CONTEXT OF THE INDUSTRY 4.0. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES TOPICS OF DIGITAL AND DIGITAL/ANALOG MIXED-SIGNAL ELECTRONICS, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE OPERATION, CONFIGURATION AND ARCHITECTURES OF CONTROL AND PROCESSING SYSTEMS FOR EMBEDDED SYSTEMS, AND OF APPARATUS FOR INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONIC APPLICATIONS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY
THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO KNOW AND USE:
•APPLICATIONS OF THE BOOLEAN ALGEBRA TO THE COMBINATIONAL LOGIC
•NUMERICAL SYSTEMS AND BINARY ARITHMETIC
•THE MAIN COMBINATORIAL AND SEQUENTIAL BUILDING BLOCKS OF DIGITAL SYSTEMS.
•THE MOST DIFFUSED TYPES OF REGISTERS FOR THE OPERATION AND INTERFACING OF DIGITAL COMPONENTS AND SUBSYSTEMS.
•THE FINITE STATE MACHINES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS.
•THE DIFFERENT TYPE OF MEMORY SUBSYSTEMS: SRAM, DRAM, FLASH.
•THE SWITCHING LEVEL SIMULATION ENVIRONMENTS
•INTERFACING ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS AT BOARD AND SYSTEM-LEVEL - ELEMENTS OF SYSTEM DESIGN AND DRAFTING OF SPECIFIC PROJECTS IN COMPLEX ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS.
•THE DIFFERENT TYPE OF AMPLIFIER STAGES AND THEIR FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIOR.
•SIGNAL AMPLIFIERS FROM APPLICATION FIELD TOWARD DIGITAL ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
•INTERFACING ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS AT BOARD AND SYSTEM-LEVEL
•DATASHEETS OF COMMON CIRCUITS AND SUB-SYSTEMS

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
THE STUDENT WILL SUCCEED IN:
-- IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS OF DIGITAL CIRCUITS;
- UNDERSTAND THE CHOICES FOR INTERFACING THE ANALOG SIGNALS WITH THE DIGITAL SYSTEM;
- KEEP IN MIND THE LIMITS FOR A "SAFE" OPERATION OF THE COMPONENTS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE A TECHNICAL-SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE IN THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXPOSITION AND IN THE COMMUNICATION WITH THE WORK GROUP DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DESIGN OF THE DIGITAL SYSTEM.

ABILITY TO LEARN
DUE TO THE NEED TO TRANSMIT TO THE STUDENT THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE THE EFFECTS OF THE PERFORMANCE LIMITS OF THE CIRCUITS IN THE DIGITAL SYSTEM, HE/SHE WILL BE AWARE OF THE CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION OF THESE SYSTEMS AND THE NEED FOR CONTINUOUS AUTONOMOUS LEARNING.
Prerequisites
PREREQUISITES ARE:
-KNOWLEDGE OF THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE CIRCUIT THEORY IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE GOALS SET FOR THE STUDENT.
Contents
•BOOLEAN ALGEBRA AND COMBINATIONAL LOGIC (3 HOURS).
•COMBINATIONAL NETWORK DESIGN (HOURS THEORY: 6, EXERC.: 4)
•NUMERAL SYSTEMS AND BINARY ARITHMETIC (HOURS THEORY: 4, EXERC.: 2).
•COMPLEMENTS IN COMBINATIONAL NETWORK DESIGN (HOURS THEORY: 4, EXERC.: 3)
•INTRODUCTION TO SEQUENTIAL NETWORKS (HOURS THEORY: 4; EXERC.: 3).
•FLIP-FLOP-BASED SYNCHRONOUS NETWORKS (HOURS THEORY: 5; EXERC.: 3)
•SEQUENTIAL NETWORKS AS FINITE STATE MACHINES (HOURS THEORY: 4; LAB.: 5)
•THE FINITE STATE MACHINE AS SYSTEM CONTROLLER (HOUR THEORY: 5)
•BASIC ELEMENTS OF ANALOG CIRCUITS FOR SIGNAL AMPLIFICATION AND CONDITIONING. (HOUR THEORY: 5)
Teaching Methods
THE LECTURES ARE SCHEDULED AS FOLLOWS:

-THEORETICAL LECTURES (HOURS 36);
-CLASSROOM AND LAB. EXERCISES (HOURS 25): EXERCISES, DEVELOPMENT OF COMBINATORIAL AND SEQUENTIAL SYSTEMS AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES IN LABORATORY.

EXERCISES AND DEVELOPMENT OF FPGA SYSTEMS, SHOWN DURING THE THEORETICAL LECTURES, USING CAD.
Verification of learning
THE EVALUATION OF EXAM WILL TAKE PLACE THROUGH AN ORAL TEST CONSISTING ON THE PRESENTATION OF A PAPER AND QUESTIONS RELEVANT TO THE TOPIC OF THE COURSE. THE PAPER FORESEES THE REALIZATION OF A DIGITAL SYSTEM, ASSIGNED DURING THE COURSE. THE TECHNICAL DISCUSSION REPORT WILL BE PROVIDED TO THE TEACHER WHO WILL BE ASSESSED ON THE BASIS OF TECHNICAL CORRECTNESS AND COMPLETENESS. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS (THE MINIMUM GRADE CORRESPONDS TO "18" AND THE MAXIMUM TO "30 E LAUDE"). "30 E LAUDE" MAY BE GIVEN IN THE CASE OF AN ORAL TEST THAT FULLY SATISFIES THE EVALUATION CRITERIA. DURING THE COURSE, PARTIAL WRITTEN EXONERATIVE TESTS ARE SCHEDULED.
