KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE COURSE INTENDS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN METHODOLOGIES OF BIOCHEMISTRY. THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY SUCH BIOCHEMICAL METHODS IN STUDYING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF BIOLOGICAL MOLECULES. IT WILL ALSO DEVELOP A CRITICAL THINKING ABOUT THE IMPACT OF MODERN BIOCHEMICAL METHODS IN BIOLOGICAL AND BIOTECHNOLOGICAL FIELDS. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND EXECUTE A BIOMOLECULE MANIPULATION PROTOCOL. IT WILL ALSO ACQUIRE THE BASIC ELEMENTS FOR STUDYING MOLECULAR DESIGN USING COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY TOOLS. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ACQUIRED THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN BIOCHEMISTRY PROVIDED BY THE TRIENNIAL STUDY PROGRAM, WITH PARTICULAR FOCUS ON: - CHEMICAL FEATURES OF BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES (PROTEINS, NUCLEIC ACIDS, LIPIDS, GLUCIDS) - ROLE OF THESE MACROMOLECULES IN THE HUMAN BODY |

THE COURSE INCLUDES DIDACTIC HOURS IN THE FORM OF LECTURES LECTURES AND HOURS OF GUIDED EXERCISES IN THE LABORATORY OF BIOCHEMISTRY (1 CFU: MADE BY PROF.SSA IVANA CAPUTO) AND IN THE LABORATORY OF BIOINFORMATICS, DURING WHICH STUDENTS DIRECTLY CHECK WHAT THE TEACHER INTRODUCES IN THE COURSE OF LESSON (WITH A LEARNING-BY-DOING APPROACH). THE TOPICS PRESENTED IN THE CLASSROOM LESSONS ARE: - STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PROTEINS AND NUCLEIC ACIDS (ABOUT 2 H FRONTAL LESSONS) - ELEMENTS OF CITOLOGY AND CELLULAR CULTURES (ABOUT 4 H FRONTAL LESSONS) - METHODS FOR PROTEIN AND DNA PURIFICATION: HOMOGENEIZATION OF CELLS AND TISSUES, DIFFERENTIAL PRECIPITATION METHODS, CENTRIFUGAL TECHNIQUES (ABOUT 4 H FRONTAL LESSONS); PCR (ABOUT 1 H FRONTAL LESSON) - CHROMATOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES (ABOUT 3 H FRONTAL LESSON) - ELECTROPHORETIC METHODS FOR PROTEINS AND NUCLEIC ACIDS (ABOUT 4 H FRONTAL LESSONS); WESTERN BLOT (ABOUT 1 H FRONTAL LESSON) - SPECTROSCOPIC METHODS FOR THE STUDY OF PROTEINS AND NUCLEIC ACIDS: UV-VIS ABSORPTION, FLUORESCENCE, CIRCULAR DICROISM, IR, NMR (ABOUT 6 H FRONTAL LESSON) - TECHNIQUES OF SEQUENCING OF PROTEINS AND NUCLEIC ACIDS: CLASSIC TECHNIQUES AND NEXT-GENERATION (ABOUT 5 H FRONTAL LESSON) - BIOCHEMICAL METHODS FOR THE STUDY OF MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS (ABOUT 3 H FRONTAL LESSONS) THE ARGUMENTS TREATED IN THE BIOINFORMATIC LABORATORY CONCERNS COMPUTATIONAL APPLICATIONS FOR THE STUDY OF PROTEINS AND SIMULATIONS OF INTERACTIONS PROTEIN-LIGANDO (DOCKING) |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE TEACHING PROVIDES 56 HOURS OF TEACHING BETWEEN LESSONS, EXERCISES AND PRACTICAL LABORATORY (6 CFUS). IN PARTICULAR, THERE ARE 32 HOURS OF CLASSROOM LESSONS (4 CFUS), 12 HOURS OF ASSISTED BIOINFORMATICS LABORATORY EXERCISES (1 CFU), MADE BY DR. MARABOTTI, AND 12 HOURS OF ASSISTED BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY EXERCISES (1 CFU) MADE BY PROF. CAPUTO. CLASSROOM LESSONS WILL BE HELD WITH THE HELP OF PROJECTIONS AND ACCESS TO FREELY AVAILABLE ONLINE MEDIA. GUIDED EXERCISES IN THE BIOINFORMATICS LABORATORY WILL INCLUDE ACTIVITIES LED BY THE TEACHER. IN THE BIOINFORMATICS LAB, STUDENTS WILL WORK ON TERMINALS AND WILL LEARN WHICH ARE THE MOST POPULAR BIOINFORMATICS TOOLS FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE SEQUENCE, STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONS OF THE PROTEINS, AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN THE BIOLOGICAL FIELD. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING IS CERTIFIED BY EXAMINATION. THE EXAMINATION PROVIDES AN ORAL TEST THAT CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE TEACHING PROGRAM AND IS DESIGNED TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE ABILITY TO EXPOSURE BY USING THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ORGANIZE THE EXHIBITION ON THE SAME SUBJECTS WITH THEORETICAL CONTENT. ALSO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIFFERENT TOOLS AND APPLICATIONS LEARNT DURING THE EXERCISES WILL BE EVALUATED BY THE ORAL TEST. |
