Objectives
ACQUISITION OF BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON THE MAIN BIOCHEMICAL PROCESSES, THE UNDERSTANTING THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION OF THE MAIN BIOMOLECULES. KNOW THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF BIOENERGETICS AND MEANING OF GENERAL METABOLISM. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO ADDRESS THE STUDY AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHEMICAL NATURE AND THE STRUCTURE OF THE CONSTITUENTS OF THE LIVING MATTER, OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF BIOMOLECULES, AND OF THE ENERGY CHANGES ASSOCIATED WITH THEM.
THE MODULE IN PLANT GENETICS IS AIMED AT OFFERING TO THE STUDENTS BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS CONTROLLING THE MAIN CELLULAR FUNCTIONS, WITH MAJOR EMPHASIS ON PLANT CELLS, ANALYZING AND DISCUSSING THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GENETIC INHERITANCE OF TRAITS, INCLUDING ALSO THE GENETIC MECHANISMS CONTROLLING THE BIOSYNTHESIS OF BIOACTIVE PLANT-DERIVED SECONDARY METABOLITES.
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE ON THE GENETIC AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS CONTROLLING: -THE PLANT GROWTH, DIFFERENTIATION, DEVELOPMENT AND REPRODUCTION; - THE INTERACTION OF PLANTS WITH THE ENVIRONMENT; -THE ABILITY TO SYNTHESIZE SECONDARY METABOLITES AND COMPOUNDS OF INTEREST FOR THE HUMAN HEALTH; TO FACE AND SOLVE PROBLEMS IN THE FIELDS OF PLANT IMPROVEMENT AND PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON MEDICINAL PLANTS.

Teaching Methods
UNIT BIOCHEMISTRY
THEORETICAL LESSONS CONSIST IN PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION ON THE TOPICS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM. INTERMEDIATE WRITTEN TESTS, INCLUDING OPEN QUESTIONS AND/OR MULTIPLE CHOISE ANSWERS, ARE PLANNED TO EVALUATE THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING AND KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENTS.


UNIT PLANT GENETICS
THEORETICAL LESSONS CONSIST IN PRESENTING AND DISCUSSING THE TOPICS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM.
TWO INTERMEDIATE WRITTEN TESTS ARE PLANNED TO ASCERTAIN THE PROGRESSIVE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENTS.


FOR BOTH MODULES, CLASS ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY, AS ESTABLISHED BY THE TEACHING RULES AND GUIDELINES, PUBLISHED EVERY YEAR AND AVAILABLE AT THE WWW.DIFARMA.UNISA.IT.
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND CLASS REGULARLY AND MEET ALL REQUIREMENTS SET BY THE TEACHER.
IN CASE OF LEGITIMATE ABSENCE FROM CLASS, THE TEACHER PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH APPROPRIATE ASSISTANCE AND COUNSEL ABOUT COMPLETING MISSED ASSIGNMENTS AND CLASS MATERIAL.
Verification of learning
UNIT BIOCHEMISTRY
TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ON THE TOPIS OF THE PROGRAM, TWO DIFFERENT TESTS ARE PLANNED: 1) A WRITTEN TEST, INCLUDING A TOTAL OF 10 QUESTIONS.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE SCHEDULE AND TIME WILL BE GIVEN BY THE TEACHER BEFORE THE TESTS.


THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS IN A CRITICAL DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS INCLUDED IN THE WRITTEN TEST, TO ASCERTAIN ALSO THE LEVEL OF BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED THEORETICAL BIOCHEMICAL ASPECTS TO THE HUMAN CELL, ORGAN AND TISSUE FUNCTIONS.
THE FINAL SCORE, EXPRESSED IN 30/30 IS CALCULATED AS THE MEAN VALUE OF THE SCORES OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS AND ORAL EXAMINATION. THE FINAL SCORE, EXPRESSED IN 30/30, FOR THIS UNIT WILL BE CALCULATED AS THE MEAN VALUES OF THE SCORES OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS (WEIGHT 50 % AND THE ORAL EXAM (WEIGHT 50%).


UNIT PLANT GENETICS
THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING AND THE ABILTY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED THEORETICAL NOTIONS WILL BE EVALUATED THROUGH:
1) AN INTERMEDIATED WRITTEN TEST ON THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE, INCLUDING A TOTAL OF 30 QUESTIONS WITH AN OPEN ANSWER (50%) AND QUESTIONS WITH MULTIPLE CHOICE ANSWERS (50%) (DURATION: 2 HOURS); 2) 5 QUIZZES AND EXERCISES ON MENDELIAN GENETICS AND ASSOCIATED GENES (DURATION: 60 MINUTES);
FOR WRITTEN TESTS AND THE REPORT THE SCORE IS EXPRESSED IN 30/30.
STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THE WRITTEN TESTS WILL GO THROUGH AN ORAL EXAM ON THE TOPICS NOT INCLUDED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS.

THE FINAL SCORE, EXPRESSED IN 30/30, FOR THIS UNIT WILL BE CALCULATED AS THE MEAN VALUES OF THE SCORES OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS (WEIGHT 50 % FIRST TEST; 12.5% SECOND TEST; 25% WRITTEN REPORT ON PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES) AND THE ORAL EXAM (WEIGHT 25%).


THE OVERALL SCORE FOR THE ENTIRE COURSE WILL BE THE MEAN VALUE OF THE SCORES OBTAINED FOR EACH UNIT.

FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE SCHEDULE AND TOPICS FOR EACH WRITTEN TEST OR ORAL EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN BY THE TEACHER DURING THE COURSE AND BEFORE THE DATE OF THE TEST.
