Objectives
ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE ON A) THE BOTANICAL CLASSIFICATION, BIOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGY, PROPAGATION AND SPECIFIC AGRONOMICAL TECHNIQUES CULTIVATION OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SPECIES; AND B) ANALYSIS OF THOSE VARIABLES AFFECTING SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION IN OPEN FIELDS, AND UNDER PROTECTED AND SOILLESS CULTIVATION.
THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE WILL BE:

- THE BOTANICAL CLASSIFICATION, THE BIOLOGICAL CYCLES AND THE PHYSIOLOGY OF FRUIT TREES AND HORTICULTURAL PLANTS
- THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN VEGETATIVE AND REPRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY,
- PROPAGATION AND SPECIFIC CULTIVATION TECHNIQUES OF HORTICULTURAL SPECIES
- NUTRITIONAL AND WATER REQUIREMENTS, PRUNING OPERATIONS
- PLANT/ENVIRONMENT RELATIONSHIPS, AND TECHNOLOGIES AIMED TO REDUCE EXTERNAL INPUTS UNDER REFERENCE CULTIVATION SYSTEMS
- THE KNOWLEDGE OF AVANT-GARDE ISSUES, THROUGH THE ATTENDANCE OF SEMINARS, SUCH AS THE ANALYSIS OF SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES OF THE APTITUDE FOR SPECIFIC AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION.

THE MAIN SKILLS WILL BE:

- TO ANALYZE THE VARIABLES AFFECTING SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION IN THE OPEN FIELD, AND UNDER PROTECTED AND SOILLESS CULTIVATION
- TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED FOR THE SUSTAINABLE PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT OF FRUIT TREE AND VEGETABLE SYSTEMS
- TO CARRY OUT PROFESSIONAL AND PROJECT ACTIVITIES IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INTERDISCIPLINARY GROUPS, AND IN THE AGRO-INDUSTRIAL SECTOR;
- TO FORMULATE CRITICAL JUDGMENTS AND COMMUNICATE OWN RESULTS OR CRITICAL CONCLUSIONS TO SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST INTERLOCUTORS IN A CLEAR AND ARTICULATED WAY.

Prerequisites
IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND AND APPLY MOST OF THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE, IT IS NECESSARY TO PASS PREPARATORY EXAMINATION OF AGRONOMY.
ALTHOUGH IT DOES NOT PROVIDE FORMAL PROPEDEUTICITY, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE STUDENT HAS PASSED THE LABORATORY OF CHEMICAL-AGRARIAN ANALYSIS AND THE LABORATORY OF BIOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGIES.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STADIUM AND STAGE. STAGES OF THE LIFE CYCLE: YOUTH, MATURITY, SENESCENCE - INSENILATION - PRE-INSENILMENT - REJOYING. VEGETATIVE CYCLE AND REPRODUCTIVE/PRODUCTION CYCLE. DEVELOPMENT OF FRUIT, MATURATION AND QUALITY

INDUCTION, DIFFERENTIATION, BUD DORMANCY - COLD NEEDS - FLOWERING FENOGRAMS. METHOD FOR THE CALCULATION OF COLD NEEDS - REFERENCE TO THE ROLE OF THE PHYTORMONS

FORCING AND PROTECTION SYSTEMS: CULTURAL LANDSCAPES FROM FORCING SYSTEMS IN FIELDS WITH GREENHOUSES; MATERIALS AND PLANT ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA; CLIMATE IN GREENHOUSE AND ITS CONTROL

FERTILIZATION, IRRIGATION AND FERTIGATION IN HORTICULTURE: FERTILIZER TYPE; FERTLIZATION SCHEDULING IN HORTICULTURE; IRRIGATION SCHEDULING; IRRIGATION SYSTEMS FOR WATER AND NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT. NUTRITIVE SOLUTION.
(2,5 ECTS FRON LESSON + 0,6 EXCERCISE IN FIELD)
FIVE GROUPS OF VEGETABLE CROPS ARE EXAMINED WHERE THE NEEDS AND COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTIVATION, PRODUCT DESTINATION AND QUALITY ASPECTS ARE DISCUSSED. FOR EVERY GROUP A MODEL SPECIES IS TREATED IN A MORE DEEPENED WAY CHOSEN FOR ITS DIFFUSION AND ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA. OTHER MINOR IMPORTANCE SPECIES ARE REPORTED OF WHICH YOU SHOW THE BOTANICAL AND VARIETIES, PLANT AND CULTURAL CARE, QUALITY COLLECTION AND PRODUCT MARKETING VEGETABLES.
HORTICULTURAL CROPS:
TUBERS, ROOTS, BULBS: MODEL - POTATOES, CARROTS, ONIONS, GARLIC;
FLOWER VEGETABLES: MODEL - ARTICHOKE, CAULIFLOWER, BROCCOLI CABBAGE
GRAIN LEGUMES: MODEL - BEAN, CHICKPEAS, CHICKLING VETCH, LENTIL, HORSEBEAN.
LEAF AND STEM VEGETABLES: MODEL - LETTUCE AND VEGETABLES FOR IV GAMMA PRODUCTION, CHICORY, RADICCHI, ASPARAGUS, FENNEL, CABBAGES, TYPES OF LETTUCE.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES ACCOMPANIED BY EXERCISE PRACTICES (GUIDED VISITS AT FRUIT AND VEGETABLE FARMS, AND/OR PLANT NURSERY) AS REPORTED IN THE PROGRAM.
THEY WILL ALSO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COURSE, SEMINARS HELD BY VISITING PROFESSORS OR EXPERTS ON TOPICS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST.
Verification of learning
FOR EACH MODULE, THE ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE WILL TAKE PLACE THROUGH WRITTEN AND ORAL TESTS. THE SINGLE WRITTEN TEST WILL TAKE PLACE AT LEAST 10 DAYS BEFORE THE RESPECTIVE ORAL EXAM. THE WRITTEN TEST WILL BE COMPOSED BY 35 QUESTIONS: 30 WITH MULTIPLE ANSWERS (0.5 POINTS MAX EACH) AND 5 WITH OPEN ANSWERS (3 POINTS MAX EACH). THE WRITTEN TEST WILL LAST 1.5 HOURS AND WILL BE CONSIDERED PASSED WITH A MINIMUM SCORE OF 18/30. THE FOLLOWING ORAL EXAM WILL LAST 20 MINUTES AND WILL CONSIST OF 3 QUESTIONS ESSENTIALLY ON THE INCORRECT ANSWERS OF THE WRITTEN TEST. IT WILL BE PASSED WITH A MINIMUM SCORE OF 18/30. THE FINAL VOTE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS, WILL BE GIVEN BY THE ARITHMETIC AVERAGE OF THE VOTES REPORTED IN THE INDIVIDUAL TESTS PASSED.
THE RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN AND ORAL TESTS WILL BE VALID FOR THE ENTIRE ACADEMIC YEAR.
TWO EXERCISE PRACTICES WILL BE PERFORMED IN CLASSROOM TO PREPARE FOR THE WRITTEN TESTS.
