Objectives
The course aims at the acquisition of skills needed for the design of control systems: user's specifications, model of the system to be controlled, design of the control algorithms, realization of the controller, connection to the field variables, characterization of the obtained controlled system.

Knowledge and understanding
Analysis of linear, continuous-time dynamic systems in the complex and frequency domains. Classical feedback control in the complex and frequency domains. Analysis of linear discrete-time dynamic systems in the complex domain. Digital control.

Applying knowledge and understanding
Computation of the response of linear dynamic systems. Computation of frequency diagrams. Design of control systems.
Prerequisites
FOR THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE GOALS, A BASIC MATHEMATICAL KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO MATRIX CALCULUS, DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, LAPLACE TRANSFORM AND FOURIER SERIES AND TRANSFORMS

MATEMATICA 3 IS REQUIRED.

Teaching Methods
LECTURES AND CLASSROOM PRACTICE. IN CLASSROOM PRACTICE, SIMPLE PROBLEMS ARE ASSIGNED, SOLVED AND DISCUSSED

IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE TO THE FINAL ASSESSMENT AND TO GAIN THE CREDITS CORRESPONDING TO THE COURSE, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE HOURS OF ASSISTED TEACHING ACTIVITIES.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM IS DESIGNED TO EVALUATE AS A WHOLE: THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS PRESENTED IN THE COURSE, THE ABILITY TO APPLY THAT KNOWLEDGE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS OF ANALYSIS AND CONTROL OF DYNAMIC SYSTEMS, INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGMENT, COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO LEARN.
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST, WHOSE PURPOSE IS TO ASSESS THE ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE, TO WRITE A TECHNICAL REPORT, THE INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGMENT, AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW, THE PURPOSE OF WHICH IS TO ASSESS THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTANDING, THE ABILITY TO LEARN, ORAL PRESENTATION.
THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS IN SOLVING TYPICAL PROBLEMS PRESENTED IN THE COURSE INCLUDING: 1) CALCULATION OF THE STEADY-STATE AND TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF DYNAMIC SYSTEMS IN CONTINUOUS OR DISCRETE TIME 2) DRAWING OF FREQUENCY DIAGRAMS 3) CONTROLLER DESIGN. THE WRITTEN TEST WILL BE EVALUATED BY THE FOLLOWING SCALE: EXCELLENT (OTTIMO), GOOD (BUONO), FAIR (DISCRETE), MORE THAN SUFFICIENT (PIÙ CHE SUFFICIENTE), SUFFICIENT (SUFFICIENT), REJECTED (INSUFFICIENTE). REJECTED TEST MUST BE REPEATED. THE TEST WILL BE ASSESSED AS SUFFICIENT IF CONTROLLER DESIGN AND THE SOLUTION OF AT LEAST ONE OF THE OTHER TWO PROBLEMS PRESENTED ABOVE HAVE BEEN CORRECTLY SET EVEN IF THE RESULTS ARE INCORRECT. THE TEST WILL BE EVALUATED AS EXCELLENT IF ALL THE PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN SOLVED CORRECTLY PRESENTED WITH A CLEAR EXPOSITION OF THE USED METHODOLOGIES.
THE ORAL EXAMINATION WILL COVER ALL THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE AND ASSESSMENT WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE KNOWLEDGE DEMONSTRATED BY THE STUDENT AND THE DEGREE OF ITS DEPTH, PROVEN ABILITY TO LEARN, THE QUALITY OF THE PRESENTATION.
IN THE FINAL EVALUATION, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS, THE EVALUATION OF THE WRITTEN TEST WILL ACCOUNT FOR 60% WHILE THE INTERVIEW FOR 40%. THE CUM LAUDE MAY BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY CAN APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE AUTONOMOUSLY EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN THE COURSE.
