THE LABORATORY AIMS TO PROVIDE THE ABILITY TO CARRY OUT ANALYSES FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE MAIN PARAMETERS DEFINING SOIL FERTILITY AND THE QUALITY OF PRIMARY PRODUCTION THROUGH FIELD AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES. THE MAIN CONSOLIDATED KNOWLEDGE WILL BE: - SOIL AND PLANT SAMPLING PROCEDURES - ANALYSIS OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SOIL PARAMETERS - ANALYSIS REVEALING THE PRIMARY PRODUCTION QUALITY THE MAIN SKILLS WILL CONSIST IN: - DRAFTING SOIL AND FRUIT SAMPLING PLANS - ANALYZING THE PRIMARY PRODUCTION QUALITY BY MEANS OF SIMPLE CHARACTERISTICS - IDENTIFYING THE MAIN PARAMETERS TO BE MEASURED TO EXPRESS JUDGMENT ON SOIL FERTILITY - USING PORTABLE FIELD INSTRUMENTS TO SUPPORT AGRONOMIC ACTIVITIES |

THE TOPICS COVERED BY THE LABORATORY OF AGRICULTURAL AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS REQUIRE AN EXPERTISE ON THE ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF SOIL AND AGROFOOD MATRICES, IN THEIR INORGANIC AND ORGANIC COMPONENTS. ALTHOUGH THE ACHIEVEMENT OF PREVIOUS COURSES IS NOT DUE, THE STUDENT WHO WANTS TO FOLLOW THE LABORATORY OF AGRONOMIC AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS WITH GOOD RESULTS, SHOULD HAVE PASSED THE EXAMINATION OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY AND BOTANY |

THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING LABORATORY ACTIVITIES THAT WILL BE INTRODUCED BY BASIC CONCEPTS AND RECALLS TO THE KNOWLEDGES ACQUIRED IN THE PREVIOUS COURSES: SOIL SECTION: -LABORATORY AND FIELD ANALYSIS OF SOIL TEXTURE, PH, HYDROPHOBICITY, ELECTRIC CONDUCTIVITY AND LABILE ORGANIC MATTER. -FIELD ANALYSIS USING PORTABLE DEVICES: SOIL COLOR, APPARENT DENSITY, INFILTRATION, SOIL NITRATES, EARTHWORMS QUANTITY. AGROFOOD SECTION: -LABORATORY ANALYSIS INCLUDING TRITABLE ACIDITY AND TOTAL POLYPHENOLS -FIELD ANALYSIS OF FRUIT CALIBER, °BRIX, PRODUCT HARDNESS, COLOR. THE LABORATORY OF AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRY ANALYSIS PROVIDES 3 UNIVERSITY FORMATIVE CREDITS - ECTS (36 HOURS) OF MULTIDISCIPLINARY LABORATORY ACTIVITIES. ECTSS WILL BE ORGANIZED IN THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: 1.5 ECTS (18 HOURS): FIELD AND LAB ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN SOIL CHARACTERISTICS 1 ECTS (12 HOURS): FIELD AND LAB ANALYSIS OF SOME CROPS CHARACTERISTICS 0.5 ECTS (6 HOURS): THEORETICAL LESSONS AND PRACTICAL EXERCISES. THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS: - EACH ACTIVITY WILL BE PRECEDED BY A SHORT RECALL ON THE THEORETICAL BASIS, - DURING MULTIDISCIPLINARY LAB ACTIVITIES STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE TO PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS ON SOIL AND PLANT PARAMETERS ASSESSMENT. THE USE OF FIELD ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES (VISUAL, TACTILE OR BY PORTABLE DEVICES) WILL BE COMBINED WITH LABORATORY ASSESSMENTS; - THE LABORATORY OF AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRY ANALYSIS ALSO PROVIDES A SYNTHESIS PHASE IN WHICH THE STUDENT WILL EXPRESS VALUE JUDGMENTS ON THE MEASURED PARAMETERS. STUDENTS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS (MAXIMUM 35 STUDENTS PER GROUP) AND WILL FOLLOW 12 INDIVIDUAL LABORATORY ACTIVITIES OF 2.5 HOURS EACH. |

THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS IN A SINGLE WRITTEN TEST IN WHICH THE STUDENT HAS TO ANSWER SEVERAL QUESTIONS (BOTH OPEN-ENDED AND MULTIPLE-CHOICES QUESTIONS) CONCERNING THE WHOLE COURSE PROGRAM AND FOCUSING MOSTLY ON THE LABORATORY ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED DURING THE CLASS. THE STUDENT MUST ANSWER CORRECTLY TO MOST OF QUESTIONS TO PASS THE EXAM. |
