Objectives
THIS COURSE WILL EXPLORE THE TOPIC OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH BY REFLECTING ON THE THEORIES AND METHODS THAT HAVE HISTORICALLY PERMEATED IT.
ARCHAEOLOGY IS A HISTORICAL DISCIPLINE. IT DELINEATES THE CULTURAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC FRAMEWORK OF ANCIENT SOCIETIES THROUGH MATERIAL DOCUMENTS, ANALYSED IN A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE.
THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON A FEW KEY THEMES: ANCIENT ART HISTORY, THE STUDY OF IMAGERY, AND THE RECONSTRUCTION AND INTERPRETATION OF "ARCHAEOLOGICAL" LANDSCAPES. METHODOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES ARE AT THE CENTRE OF AN EVOLVING DEBATE, AND THIS COURSE PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH THE UP-TO-DATE CRITICAL TOOLS THEY NEED TO ENGAGE WITH IT ACROSS ALL CURRICULA.
Prerequisites
THERE IS NO PREREQUISITE FOR THE COURSE.
Contents
THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED AROUND THREE CORE MODULES. THE FIRST MODULE, ENTITLED "A HISTORY OF RESEARCH ON ANCIENT ART" (SSD ARCH-01/D), SETS OUT TO PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH ON ANCIENT ART.
THE SECOND MODULE, ENTITLED "ICONOGRAPHY IN ANCIENT ART: MATERIALS, METHODS, AND MEANING (SSD ARCH-01/D), EXPLORES THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORKS THAT HAVE INFORMED THE INTERPRETATION OF ICONOGRAPHY AND FIGURATIVE PROGRAMS IN ANCIENT ART.
FINALLY, THE THIRD MODULE, ENTITLED "HISTORY AND SYSTEMS OF READING AND INTERPRETING LANDSCAPES" (SSD ARCH-01/G), ENGAGES WITH THE HISTORICAL EVOLUTION OF APPROACHES TO READING AND INTERPRETING ANCIENT LANDSCAPES.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO LECTURES (30 HOURS), WHICH WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM, IN MUSEUMS AND IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES. THESE EXERCISES WILL PROVIDE THE ADVANCED TRAINING YOU NEED TO IDENTIFY, ANALYSE AND INTERPRET LANDSCAPES, CONTEXTS, MONUMENTS, SITES AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE. THEY MEET THE REQUIRED TRAINING LEVEL.
Verification of learning
YOU MUST PASS AN ORAL EXAMINATION ACCORDING TO THE PUBLISHED TIMETABLE ON THE COURSE WEBSITE.
THE EXAMINATION WILL TEST YOUR ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY DEVELOP THE KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE ACQUIRED DURING THE COURSE.
Texts
DOCTORAL STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED WITH A REFERENCE BIBLIOGRAPHY AT THE START OF THE COURSE. THIS ENABLES THEM TO CONFIDENTLY PARTICIPATE IN THE DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS COVERED.
